As colder temperatures are finally rolling in, the risk of having a pipe burst in your home or business goes up exponentially.  Water in the pipes freezes, causing expansion that cracks the pipe and allows water to flow freely into the floor below.  This can lead to massive damage to the building, but can also destroy sentimental and important items like photos, documents, and other keepsakes.

One easy way to lessen the risk of this occurring is to keep your thermostat at a low level when you are not home.  Do some research to see what temperature makes sense for your home, depending on where pipes are located, and how much insulation is present.  Whether this is while you are at work during the day, or for vacations, the minimal increase in cost is well worth the devastation that a burst pipe can cause.
