Pay Attention If You Are Going On Vacation

This time of year is very popular for residents of Fairfield County to go on vacation.  The craziness of the holidays is over, and people are looking to escape the harsh temperatures with warmer weather.  But while you are basking in the sun, your home could be at risk for water damage related to winter weather.  We see it every year; people who go away for a period of time, only to return to a home that has extensive water damage.  When pipes become too cold, or rapidly change temperature, they can burst.  So how do you guard against this happening to you?

• Leave your thermostat on at a low temperature to keep sensitive areas of your home warm enough.  Most experts recommend 55 degrees.
• Leave doors open to promote airflow between areas of the house.  This will prevent one area from becoming too cold.  You can also leave areas under sinks open, to expose those pipes to warmer air.
• Ask a friend or neighbor to check in on your house.  Even better, have someone house-sit for you.  They can keep an eye on everything.  In the event that any damage does occur, they will notice it long before you return from your vacation, and can stop more damage from occurring.
