Water damage can happen at any time. Water damage can also occur from a wide array of sources. These sources are not all equal when it comes to the danger that it possibly poses to you and your family. Depending on the type, or “category” of water, different remediation techniques will be used. Read below to learn more about the different categories of water, and how SERVPRO of Stamford expertly handles each type.
Category 1: Clean Water
Clean water poses little risk to those who come into contact with it. It is free of sewage and toxins. If caught fast enough, items affected by clean water can be dried successfully without extra precautions taken. Water damage with clean water typically comes from water pipes, overflowing sinks and bathtubs, or from certain appliances.
Category 2: Gray Water
Gray water poses some risk to those who come into contact if proper precautions are not taken. Items affected by gray water must be dried AND disinfected so that harmful toxins do not cause health issues in the future. Gray water comes from places like overflowing toilets, washing machines, or sump pump backups and failures.
Category 3: Black Water
Black water poses serious risk to those who come into contact with it. Action must be taken immediately to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. Items that are affected by this type of water will most likely need to be discarded. After proper drying of the property is finished, significant disinfection will have to be performed. Common sources of black water are broken sewage lines, sewer backups, or water that has a high concentration of chemicals.
