Summer Rain Is Here To Stay

6/20/2022 (Permalink)

The summer of 2022 has started just like any other summer in Fairfield County.  We’ve experienced the typical sweltering heat, followed by days that have you digging warm clothes from your closet to feel comfortable.  Also, per usual, we’ve seen a number of summer showers, ranging from light drizzles to torrential downpours.  We know that rain is just a part of our summer season.

But with that rain can come water damage, an occurrence that too many residents in the area will find out the hard way.  Water damage from summer showers can come in many forms.

On the low end of the spectrum, lingering moisture in the air can lead to increased mold growth that can go undetected for months, until a smell is noticed and it is too late.  Water can also come in through weak points in your home or business’ roof or foundation.  Water trickling into a structure this way can cause minor to major damage, depending on where in the structure it enters, the material that it comes into contact with, and how long the water is left to sit.  At the extreme end of the spectrum, groundwater swells and major rain storms can cause huge damage to the structure itself, or to items within.

Whatever type of water damage you have, SERVPRO of Stamford can help you when you need it. From expert mold remediation solutions, to large-scale water extraction and drying, rest assured that we have the answer.

Kitchen Fire Restoration

3/8/2022 (Permalink)

We all love a good home cooked meal. Normally, home cooking goes off without a hitch.  But every once in a while, a kitchen fire will occur for one reason or another.  Kitchen fires produce some unique challenges that other fires that occur elsewhere in a home do not.

This is because when a kitchen fire occurs, it usually happens when something is burned on the stovetop or in the oven.  When food is burned, it results in two conditions that are sometimes harder to remediate than other small fires.  These are a product of what is known as a protein fire.

Residue

The residue left by a protein fire is almost invisible.  This means that it is very hard to tell where the residue is and isn’t present.  Surfaces may remain affected and strange to the touch if not properly and thoroughly remediated.

Odor

Protein fires produce a smell that is often far worse than a fire that burns paper, cloth, or wood.  The nature of the fire also allows the foul odors to penetrate porous materials much deeper.  This means that without proper remediation, the smell is almost impossible to completely eradicate.

Most commonly, after a professional remediation is completed, the area must also be sealed or repainted to fully fix the smell.

It is important to contact a damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any fire, smoke, or soot damage. Stamford has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had damage to their property.  If you have any type of damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Fire Damage Usually Means Water Damage

3/8/2022 (Permalink)

Whenever a fire happens, regardless of location or size, it very rarely goes out on its own. Whether you put the fire out, or the services of the fire department are necessary, the fire needs to be extinguished.  This process normally uses water, and not just a cup or two.  Gallons upon gallons are used, especially when firefighters are involved.  Their job is to put the fire out as quickly as possible, which means using as much water as possible, as fast as possible.  The result of this process is water damage.

SERVPRO of Stamford is experienced in simultaneously remediating fire and water damage at the same time, at the same property.  It is not always the simplest of procedures, but we have the tools and knowledge to get the job done right the first time.

Commercial Board-Up Services In Stamford

Water Damage And Electrical Safety

2/8/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage can happen at any time.  Water damage can also occur from a wide array of sources.  These sources are not all equal when it comes to the danger that it possibly poses to you and your family.  When a water source is close to appliances or electrical wiring, there may be an added risk of electric shock.  If you observe water in contact with live wires in your home or business, there are some safety measures that you can take to protect you and your family.

  1. Unplug any appliance or electrical item as soon as you are aware of potential water damage in the area.  This will protect you, as well as potentially save your electronics from power surges that could damage them.
  2. Turn off any breaker or fuse that controls the circuits in the area where the water is present.
  3. If you notice any wires or pools of water that are buzzing, that means that they are holding a charge and may shock you.  Avoid this at all costs.
  4. If you cannot safely do any of the above steps, wait for a professional to come and assess the risk first.

It is important to contact a water damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any water damage. Categories Of Water

2/7/2022 (Permalink)

Water damage can happen at any time.  Water damage can also occur from a wide array of sources.  These sources are not all equal when it comes to the danger that it possibly poses to you and your family.  Depending on the type, or “category” of water, different remediation techniques will be used.  Read below to learn more about the different categories of water, and how SERVPRO of Stamford expertly handles each type.

Category 1: Clean Water

Clean water poses little risk to those who come into contact with it.  It is free of sewage and toxins.  If caught fast enough, items affected by clean water can be dried successfully without extra precautions taken.  Water damage with clean water typically comes from water pipes, overflowing sinks and bathtubs, or from certain appliances.

Category 2: Gray Water

Gray water poses some risk to those who come into contact if proper precautions are not taken.  Items affected by gray water must be dried AND disinfected so that harmful toxins do not cause health issues in the future.  Gray water comes from places like overflowing toilets, washing machines, or sump pump backups and failures.

Category 3: Black Water

Black water poses serious risk to those who come into contact with it.  Action must be taken immediately to reduce the risk of adverse health effects.  Items that are affected by this type of water will most likely need to be discarded.  After proper drying of the property is finished, significant disinfection will have to be performed.  Common sources of black water are broken sewage lines, sewer backups, or water that has a high concentration of chemicals.

It is important to contact a water damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any water damage. Commercial Smoke Damage Restoration

2/3/2022 (Permalink)

Recently, an employee of a company in Stamford was preparing their lunch, when they inadvertently started a fire in the kitchen.  The fire grew a bit, but was eventually extinguished in a relatively short period of time.

Thankfully, beyond one employee’s ego, no one was injured.  But the same can't be said for the kitchen area of the office.  There was minor structural damage, and extensive smoke and odor damage.  The business called SERVPRO of Stamford, and we responded that day to begin remediation.  We started by removing any affected parts of the structure, which in this case was the countertop and part of one cabinet.  The main component of this restoration was removing the foul odor.  We cleaned all the surfaces and were able to remove the smell.  We installed a new countertop at a later date.  The business did not experience any interruption as a result of the speedy remediation.

It is important to contact a certified damage remediation professional as soon as you are aware of damage. SERVPRO of Stamford has over 30 years of experience working with people who need damage restoration at their business property.  If you have any type of property damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Fixing Water Damage Yourself: What Could Go Wrong?

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

Imagine the following scenario: You come home from work, and go down to your finished basement.  You turn on the light and see 3 inches of water that covers the entire floor.  You are shocked.  All you want is for the water to be gone, and fast.  You also think about how much this is going to cost.  At this point, you have two options.

Option 1: Try to clean the water yourself

You can try to extract the water with a Shop-Vac.  Then you can set up any fans and consumer-grade dehumidifiers that you have on hand.  After a few days, it seems dry, so you unplug the fans and dehumidifiers and go about your life.  A couple weeks down the road, you notice a musty odor.  You pull up the carpet to find that there is visible mold from residual moisture.  Now that has to be dealt with.  A few more weeks down the road, and you see that the sheetrock is discolored so you cut that away to find mold behind the wall as well, which also needs to be addressed.

Option 2: Call a professional

You immediately call a damage restoration professional who responds quickly.  They extract the water, dry under the carpet, and dry any belongings that can be salvaged.  They also take all necessary precautions so that mold does not grow as a result of this water damage. They use a professional moisture meter to ensure this.

As you have learned, it is important to contact a water damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any water damage. SERVPRO of Stamford has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had water damage to their property.  If you have any type of water damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

How To Prepare For A Winter Storm

1/18/2022 (Permalink)

With a significant amount of snowfall in the forecast, Stamford homeowners will be flocking to the grocery store to get their milk and bread.  Preparing to be snowed in is important, and food is definitely something that we all need.  But there are a number of things that can actually be very necessary that we can overlook. These items can be especially crucial when snowed in for an extended period of time.

  • Cell phone and portable charger so you can communicate with others
  • Items to stay warm such as extra hats, coats, mittens, and blankets in case the power goes out
  • Windshield scraper and shovel to remove snow from cars and your home
  • Flashlight with extra batteries for if the power goes out
  • Water and non-perishable snack food.
  • If possible, have a generator on hand with spare fuel.

If you do find yourself snowed in, be mindful of snow and ice damage to your property.  It is important to contact a storm damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any issues. SERVPRO of Stamford has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had storm damage to their property.  If you have any type of storm damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

You Can Have Winter Water Damage Without Seeing Water

1/18/2022 (Permalink)

In the winter months, because of the colder temperatures, we see snow instead of rain.  Many Stamford residents believe that because they don't see rain, that water damage is less likely to happen.  But this isn’t always the case.  Homes and businesses can absolutely suffer water damage during winter months.  This can happen in a few ways.

Roof Leaks - Any unaddressed leak in your roof can let melting snow into your attic or upper level.  This can lead to structural issues as well as mold.

Ice Dams - An ice dam occurs when ice builds up at the edge of your roof.  It creates a barrier so that water cannot properly run off the edge of your roof and into your gutters.  The water will stay on your roof, which can cause water damage.

Burst Pipes - Arguably the leading cause of property damage in the winter is from burst pipes.  When pipes freeze, they can contract and the rupture will usually let a large amount of water flow freely into your home or business.

It is important to contact a water damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any water damage. SERVPRO of Stamford has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had water damage to their property.  If you have any type of water damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

The New Normal For Your Business

1/13/2022 (Permalink)

Fairfield County has seen a significant uptick in COVID-19 cases in the last few weeks.  It seems like everyone has been affected, and this includes businesses as well. While we originally thought that we were past the brunt of the pandemic, it appears that we are still dealing with it.  As a business owner, it is almost inevitable that one or more of your employees will be affected.  In that case, you may be wondering how that affects your workspace.  Depending on the situation, SERVPRO of Stamford can respond to make sure that your business experiences as little interruption as possible.

The SERVPRO Difference

Professionally trained SERVPRO technicians perform cleaning, sanitizing and disinfection services according to proprietary SERVPRO protocols and CDC standards with EPA approved cleaning products to deliver a thorough and efficient cleaning experience. Not only did our team begin the pandemic with a good knowledge of decontamination practices, but through countless viral disinfection jobs in commercial spaces, we have gained expert knowledge through experience.

We can help you get back to business

It is important to contact a certified cleaning professional as soon as you are alerted to a positive case. SERVPRO of Stamford has over 30 years of experience working with people who need cleaning and disinfecting at their business property.  If you have any type of property damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Cigarette Odor And Discoloration

1/11/2022 (Permalink)

Indoor cigarette use is one way to rapidly discolor walls and add layers of foul odor to any space.  The tar and smoke cakes on the walls and ceilings, which become yellow very quickly.  The odor that lingers is also present when cigarette use is persistent, most noticeably on furniture and clothing.

These issues are very hard to remediate for homeowners themselves.  This is because both the color and smell permeate the porous material that many people have in their homes. When surface cleaner is used, it rarely penetrates to the depth that effectively cleans the issue at its source.

We have seen an uptick in homeowners that need their space cleaned, as many people are spending more time indoors due to the pandemic.  SERVPRO of Stamford has successfully remediated dozens of homes and apartments with cigarette damage in the past year.  Through our use of the latest methods and safe solutions, we can get the job done quickly and efficiently.

It is important to contact a fire and smoke damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any smoke damage. SERVPRO of Stamford has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had fire damage to their property.  If you have any type of smoke damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Frozen Pipe Season Is Here

1/10/2022 (Permalink)

We’re only a week into 2022, and we have already seen multiple large-scale water damages due to frozen pipes and burst pipes.  This damage has occurred in both residential and commercial settings alike.  Water damage, regardless of where or when it happens, has the potential to cause massive damage to the structure, as well as to personal or business belongings.

Protect yourself from this source of water damage by taking these simple precautions:

  • Make sure that your pipes are properly insulated.  If they are not, have this step done by a professional as soon as possible
  • Keep the temperature in your home or office at a temperature that will prevent pipes from freezing
  • Keep faucets at a very slow drip.  This will ensure that the water keeps moving, which will make freezing far less likely
  • Inspect your property for any air leakage that could lower the internal temperature of your home or business.  Seal any leaks you find.

It is important to contact a water damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any water damage. SERVPRO of Stamford has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had water damage to their property.  If you have any type of water damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Rain Storm in Stamford

12/31/2021 (Permalink)

Recently, a homeowner in Stamford had their basement flood as a result of heavy rainfall in the area.  Unfortunately, they had not been home at the time of the water damage, and saw the issue upon their return a few days after.

When they got home, they found their finished basement full of water, and their carpet full of water.  The water had picked up rust along the way, which had stained the carpet.  The sheetrock and insulation in the ceiling and walls were also wet.

Fortunately, they made the decision to call SERVPRO of Stamford to remediate the damage. Our team responded quickly to the home, and got to work.  First, we extracted the standing water.  Then we removed the stained and wet carpet.  The affected sheetrock and waterlogged insulation was removed next.  Once all the affected material was removed, our crew set air movers and large dehumidifiers to remove the moisture from the area.  Lastly, we sprayed an antimicrobial solution to ensure that no mold growth would occur, especially as the damage had occurred days prior.

It is important to contact a water damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any water damage. SERVPRO of Stamford has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had water damage to their property.  If you have any type of water damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Warm Winter Storms Can Still Cause Issues

12/28/2021 (Permalink)

When Stamford homeowners think of winter weather, and the damage it can cause, we think of snow and ice damage.  But the warm temperatures that the area has experienced presents a new and different set of challenges.

When it snows during cold temperatures, the water does not have the chance to melt and cause water damage.  When the temperature remains above the freezing point, the water acts just like rain that can seep into roof leaks, cause ground water swells, and basement flooding.

Secondary damage like mold can result at any time, as opposed to just in the spring months when thawing normally occurs.  SERVPRO of Stamford knows how to fix the damage right in the first place, so no secondary damage happens.

It is important to contact a water damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any water damage. SERVPRO of Stamford has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had water damage to their property.  If you have any type of water damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Rebuild After A House Fire In Stamford

12/1/2021 (Permalink)

Recently, a fire broke out in a one-story home in Stamford.  The fire completely gutted the home, so the remediation process involved steps such as cleaning smoke damage from wooden beams and removing residual odor from the space.  The remediation of fire damage is only the beginning of the entire process of bringing a home back to life.

Rebuilding the space is the next set of steps to make the house livable again.  Our rebuild team began work right after the remediation team was finished.  They framed the layout, put insulation in, sheetrocked the entire space, installed flooring, painted, and installed appliances.

In this case, the property owner wanted to also add a second floor to his home.  While not a usual part of the rebuild process, our team added the second floor during the rebuild process.

It is important to contact a fire damage restoration professional as soon as the fire is over to help limit and remediate the damage. SERVPRO of Stamford has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had fire damage to their property.  If you have any type of fire or smoke damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Wood Burning Stove Safety

12/1/2021 (Permalink)

As temperatures begin to drop, many Fairfield County homeowners will turn to their wood-burning stoves as a home heating solution.  Wood-burning stoves are a popular alternative to gas and electric heating, especially in rural areas, due to readily available fuel sourcing.

While burning wood is relatively safe, there are a few things that increase the risk for a house fire occurring. Make sure to follow the tips below to avoid any unwanted fires in your home.

Burn properly dried wood

You should only burn hardwoods that have been adequately dried out.  Split wood typically takes twelve months to dry to a point that is ready for burning in a stove.  By using only dry wood, you will ensure that your stove burns at the right temperature.

Clean routinely

There are a few areas that can be easily kept clean by any homeowner.  First, empty any ash from the bottom of the stove and store in any metal container that will not catch fire itself.  Store this container outside, and a few feet from the side of the house, where it could ignite.

Monitor creosote deposits

Creosote is a very flammable compound that can build up inside your stove and chimney.  Creosote is produced from fires that burn at a lower temperature, so not all of the flammable material is sufficiently burned in the fire.  Creosote can form in three ways, two of which are low risk.  It can form in a semi-fluid that will eventually flow back into the stove, where it will be burned off.  It can form as thin flakes that can be removed by the homeowner with light brushing, either from within the stove, or from the roof.  The third creosote formation will be in the form of a thick tar that will need to be removed by a professional.

Do You Need Business Interruption Insurance?

9/29/2021 (Permalink)

Imagine this scenario:  You own a business in Fairfield County.  After a storm that brings heavy rainfall, your business suffers water damage.  The damage is significant enough that it displaces your employees and disallows you from serving your customers at your location.  This situation may cause loss of income, as well as adding unexpected costs to remediating the damage that has happened.

Over the past few months, as Fairfield County has experienced an unprecedented amount of rainfall, this is a situation that far too many business owners have found themselves in.  We have seen businesses struggle to get back on their feet when they don't have any sort of protection against loss of income.

From Allstate: “Business interruption insurance helps protect against lost income after a covered peril affects a business. Covered perils typically include theft, fire, wind, falling objects or lightning. Be sure to read your business insurance policy documents so you know which perils your insurer helps cover.”

Sometimes business interruption insurance is built into business insurance, and sometimes it needs to be purchased separately.  If you are unsure if you have this type of protection, you should read your policy, or contact your agent to find out.

It is important to contact a damage restoration professional as soon as you notice any damage. SERVPRO of Stamford has over 30 years of experience working with people who have had damage to their business property.  If you have any type of water damage, call us immediately at 203.324.1642.

Fire Aftermath In A Stamford Home

9/23/2021 (Permalink)

Photo of drywall that has been removed. SERVPRO of Stamford removed this portion of drywall so airflow could dry inside the wall.

Recently, a small kitchen fire broke out in a Stamford home due to a pan on the stovetop being left unattended.  The fire was small enough not to cause extensive damage, but significant enough to require fire department assistance.

The fire department responded quickly, as was able to put the flames out in a matter of minutes.  But the homeowners were surprised at the resulting damage.  What many people don't realize is that in order to extinguish fires, hundreds of gallons of water are used, which causes water damage in the home.  This can be true for even a small kitchen fire such as this.

SERVPRO of Stamford was called in to remediate both the fire damage, and the water damage from the firefighting efforts.  We used safe cleaning solutions to remove odor and discoloration from the walls and ceiling.  Because the water had pooled on the floor, we extracted the water and removed a portion of the drywall to ensure that proper drying would occur within.

The moisture level returned to normal levels after a few days, and the homeowner was pleased with our work!

Smoke Damage And Lasting Effects

8/4/2021 (Permalink)

We all know the familiar phrase “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.”  The opposite is also true.  When there is fire, there is most definitely smoke filling the area.

Smoke is an unavoidable side effect of fires in homes and businesses. Everyone has an idea of what smoke looks like, but many people don't know that different types of smoke result from different types of fires.  Each kind of smoke will affect the area differently, especially when it comes to the residue that is left behind.

Smoke can be white, black, and every shade of gray in between.  Any smoke is made up of different substances like carbon particles and water vapor. The color varies based on the composition of the smoke.  For instance, a white smoke has more water vapor.  This will leave behind what is known as wet smoke residue.  A darker smoke will consist of a higher concentration of particulate matter from incomplete combustion of surrounding materials.  This smoke can penetrate porous surfaces deeper and leave a thicker layer of particles and darker discoloration.  Both smoke types leave their own unique odor, both of which need to be remediated.

As you can see, smoke damage after a fire isn't as simple as wiping down surfaces.  It is a process that requires expert diagnosis of the affected surfaces and type of smoke damage.  SERVPRO of Stamford has over 30 years of experience with fire and smoke damage. Our SERVPRO crews can have your Stamford home back to normal in no time after a fire damage.

Harsh Summer Weather

8/2/2021 (Permalink)

Summer is a season where numerous things can change, including the climate. Temperatures can fluctuate widely from morning and night.  Extremely hot days might be trailed by cooler nights. Stronger weather systems develop under these conditions. We have seen this happen recently, causing severe rain. Rainstorms cause the greater part of the serious summer weather patterns.  While wind and lightning can cause damage, it is the water itself that causes the most issues in the form of flooding.

Be Prepared

  • Keep a first aid pack available.
  • Have an emergency plan for you and your family
  • Make sure that everyone knows where emergency supplies are located
  • Know the signs of damage and look for them early so damage is limited if possible

Being prepared for harsh summer weather is half the battle for keeping your family safe and protecting your assets. Early action is the best defense against serious damage.

If you have any summer season storm-related damage in your Stamford home, please call SERVPRO of Stamford as early as possible.  This will allow us to start remediating the damage quickly, limiting the amount of damage that can occur.  Our skilled technicians will take care of the rest.

Major Water Damage At Waterfront Restaurant

6/22/2021 (Permalink)

A couple weeks ago, we received a frantic call from the owner of a large restaurant in the greater area.  Heavy rainfall caused the pipes to become overloaded to the point that a rupture was caused.  Thousands of gallons of water poured onto the restaurant dining room and entrance while they were forced to just watch.  Fortunately, they called us immediately so that we could begin remediation as soon as possible.

We arrived on scene with multiple crews of technicians, and ample equipment to get the job done.  The immense amount of water was extracted and drying began.  We set up an array of fans, dehumidifiers, and floor drying systems to reduce moisture levels as much as possible.  Now that the remediation is done, our reconstruction team will take over and rebuild the space.

Every time a business suffers damage, the potential ramifications are doubled.  This is because not only is there a cost associated with fixing the issue, but every day that they are not open is a loss of income from business interruption.  So make the right choice when you need emergency damage remediation. Call SERVPRO of Stamford at 203.324.1642.

Reconstruction After Major Damage

6/22/2021 (Permalink)

The past month has seen some pretty heavy rainfall.  And as we have learned, when rain happens, people experience a much higher risk of water coming into their homes.  This can happen through groundwater swells, clogged or faulty gutters, or from an unnoticed leak in the roof.  We see issues like this at homes and businesses alike.

Our remediation team can expertly remove any excess moisture that could cause issues like warped flooring, weak walls, and mold growth.

But what sets us apart is our ability to leverage our reconstruction team after the remediation is complete.  The situation after a remediation can look bleak.  Maybe the fire department had to cause structural damage to fight a fire.  Or maybe wood has rotten where water was unnoticed for too long.

Our team of reconstruction experts can rebuild, remodel, and construct new structures.  They have experience in flooring, siding, roofing, and general contracting.  This means that we are a one-stop shop which saves you time and trouble in a stressful situation.

We Take The Little Details Seriously

6/22/2021 (Permalink)

When disaster strikes your home or business, the process can appear simple.  Extract the water, dry other moisture.  It seems simple and straightforward, and sometimes it is.  But sometimes, depending on conditions, the process can become more nuanced and tricky. But SERVPRO of Stamford is very experienced in both simple and complex damage remediation.

When you have a flood or leak, water can get in places you never expected.  A less experienced company may extract the standing water and then dry until the visible moisture is gone.  But we know that moisture can hide in places that are not visible.  We use tools like a thermal imager to detect areas that need to be dried more thoroughly.  This is the difference between mold growth and no mold growth down the road.

If you have a fire in your home or business, there will be resulting odors that may go untreated by some companies.  We have access to, and use encapsulation and deodorization agents to eliminate odors at the source.

We have the skilled technicians and specialized equipment needed for your residential fire damage remediation needs.  That’s why SERVPRO of Stamford should be your first call. Contact us at 203.324.1642 for assistance.

Customer Success Story - Storm Damage

6/21/2021 (Permalink)

The past month has seen some pretty heavy rainfall.  And as we have learned, when rain happens, people experience a much higher risk of water coming into their homes.  This can happen through groundwater swells, clogged or faulty gutters, or from an unnoticed leak in the roof.  We see issues like this at homes and businesses alike.

Such was the case for a homeowner in Stamford.  This person and his family awoke one morning to find that water had come in through the roof during the night’s rainfall.  By the time they noticed the water, it had already pooled in the attic and begun to saturate and pour down the walls on their second floor.  They contacted their insurance company who in turn reached out to us.  We sent out a crew who extracted the standing water and dried the residual moisture.

After the home was returned to preloss condition, the owner wrote to us to express his gratitude:

“SERVPRO of Stamford came in when we were in trouble.  They took care of all of the water in our home.  Thank you for helping us during a stressful time.”

-Craig R.

If heavy rainfall and water happen to also affect your home or business, SERVPRO of Stamford can help return you to preloss condition.  We have the skilled technicians and specialized equipment to get the job done right.

How Many Of These Fire Prevention Steps Have You Taken?

3/9/2021 (Permalink)

Whether at home or at work, you need to be prepared for a fire.  They happen more often than people think, and being prepared can make the difference between a minimal fire, and a larger blaze.  It can also mean the difference between life and death. There are a plethora of ways to prepare for a fire, but there are a few basic steps that everyone can and should take before anything happens.  See how many of these you have done, and work to get the other steps in place.

Smoke Detectors

Make sure that your detectors are in working order.  Change batteries after the recommended period, and routinely check that they are working.

Fire Extinguisher

Having a working extinguisher can really mitigate the potential for a larger fire.  Make sure that they are also in working order.  Make sure that it has not expired yet.

Evacuation Route

If you need to evacuate, make sure that everyone in the family or office knows of two routes to the outside.

Supplies

Pack a supply kit in advance.  This will hold everything that you absolutely need until you are back on your feet.  Medication should absolutely go in these packs.

Let’s Talk About Secondary Damage

3/9/2021 (Permalink)

Let’s Talk About Secondary Damage

Some water damage is evident.  This will be something like a burst pipe or dishwasher overflowing. Some water damage is more hidden.  This could be a slow leak that drips over time.

Whatever type of damage you have, it needs to be addressed quickly. Especially with warmer months around the corner, water damage has the potential to turn into mold damage very fast.  The warm and damp conditions are a perfect environment for this to happen.  This is called secondary damage, as it is not the initial water damage, but is directly related to it.

This is why SERVPRO of Stamford works to minimize these risks.  When we remediate water damage, we spray antimicrobials to ensure no mold can grow.  If we are called for mold, we can remediate that as well.

After a water damage event in your home or business, SERVPRO of Stamford has the skilled technicians and specialized equipment needed for your commercial damage remediation needs.  That’s why we should be your first call. Contact us at 203.324.1642 for immediate assistance.

Our In-Facility Storage Is A Difference Maker

3/3/2021 (Permalink)

After your home or business has water or fire damage, the remediation process must run its course.   Many times, this requires that your belongings are removed and stored while the restoration happens.  Additionally, if the items themselves are damaged, they must be restored as well.  In an effort to serve our Fairfield County customers better, we offer in-facility storage.  We have containers to store your belongings before and during the remediation.

This is beneficial for two reasons:

First, after any damage to your property, you may be overwhelmed with the emotions and logistics of the remediation process.  Having our own storage facility eliminates the need to complicate the process.  We can handle everything from start to finish, including storing your contents.

Second, our facility is climate-controlled, so your possessions are not at risk of any issues that may happen at a self-storage facility.  Mold growth and theft are two issues that sometimes occur at those facilities.  We keep our facility dry and cool, as well as locked at all times.

SERVPRO of Stamford truly has your best interest at heart.  We want to see you returned to normal as soon as possible, and without spending a ton of your hard-earned money on the restoration process.  If you have any damage to your home or business, please call us.  We can be reached 24/7 at 203.324.1642.

We Don’t End At Remediation

3/3/2021 (Permalink)

Thousands of people in Fairfield County experience some sort of emergency damage at their home or business every year. Many times, either the remediation process or the initial event itself cause structural damage that need to be fixed.  For instance, if you had water damage in your home, the bottom portion of your drywall may be too degraded to dry out.  The bottom drywall may also need to be removed to dry inside the wall to prevent mold growth.

Many companies that only offer remediation services will remove the drywall.   But after the drying is complete, they will leave the walls as is.  They will have done their job, but now you have to find another company to fix the walls, including paint and trim.

SERVPRO of Stamford, on the other hand, won’t leave you hanging.  We have a full spectrum of construction and reconstruction services.  This allows us to take you from the initial damage through the process, and ends when your home or business is in preloss condition.

SERVPRO of Stamford truly has your best interest at heart.  We want to see you returned to normal as soon as possible, and with as little confusion as possible.  If you have any damage to your home or business, please call us.  We can be reached 24/7 at 203.324.1642.

But again, you are already worried about your items, business, or home, and may be overwhelmed by the claims process.  The SERVPRO of Stamford team is comfortable with the communication and documentation that keeps costs down, and gets the process done quicker. Do You Have An Emergency Water Remediation Plan For Your Business?

2/24/2021 (Permalink)

Water damage comes in many forms, ranging from minor annoyance to major catastrophe.  Water damage can also be extremely evident, like a sprinkler malfunction, or nearly invisible, like a slow water leak.

SERVPRO of Stamford is known for our unrivaled water remediation services, but we can also help you before an emergency happens.  We do this through a service called an Emergency Readiness Plan.  We document important areas around your business such as the water shutoff and sprinkler shutoff.  This free service allows us to have prior knowledge of your property, so we are able to respond even more efficiently on scene. This tool helps us save time, which, in turn, saves you money by limiting the amount of damage that can happen.

Check Your Sump Pumps Now

2/9/2021 (Permalink)

Fairfield County has had a significant amount of snow in the last few weeks, with more potentially on the way soon.  The increase in snowfall has led to large piles of snow, whether along your home or on the edges of your driveway. When the temperature inevitably rises, that snow will melt, and flow into the ground.

Sump pumps are designed to take excess groundwater that is coming into your home, and pump it out and away from the perimeter of your house.  If you are a homeowner that has experienced issues with groundwater before, or know that you are at risk of water damage, now is the time to make sure that your sump pump is in working order.  If the pump is faulty or needs replacing, it will not be able to push groundwater out of your house.

A fact that many homeowners are unaware of is that many insurance policies do not cover damage that results from groundwater.  This reinforces the need to have a working sump pump.

Water damage from melted snow and ice could prove costly. Make sure your home is protected by a working sump pump.  If you experience water damage in your home, call SERVPRO of Stamford as soon as possible.  We offer service around the clock, and are ready to help you in a time of need.

Water Damage From Everyday Appliances

2/8/2021 (Permalink)

When homeowners think of water damage sources in their home, they assume it comes from burst pipes or flood events.  But many water damages occur from common household appliances that most people have. A major event does not need to occur for significant damage to happen to you.  Here is a list of some everyday appliances that could cause damage for you.

Dishwasher

This appliance is a leading cause of water damages in residential situations. There are a few reasons that dishwashers can cause water damage.  One is an old or defective seal around the door.  If there is a problem here, water can leak out the front and onto the floor.  If too much dish detergent is used, it can also cause water to be forced out.

Washing Machine

Washing machines are a major culprit for household water damage.  This is due to the amount of water used, and the number of connections in and out of the unit. Loose or broken hoses can let gallons of water out into your home very quickly. YOu should check the connections on a regular basis to protect yourself.

Toilet

Like your washing machine, your toilet can cause water damage for a variety of reasons.  Any clog can prevent water from flushing properly.  The water has no place to go but up and out onto your bathroom floor.  Be mindful of toilet paper usage.  If your septic tank has not been emptied in a long time, it could be full.  This would also prevent water from draining properly.

SERVPRO of Stamford is available around the clock for homeowners and business owners who have any type of water damage.  We pride ourselves on our response time, experience, and professionalism.  If you have any water damage, big or small, don't hesitate to give us a call.

Emergency Response To A Local University

2/4/2021 (Permalink)

Recently, we received an emergency call in the early morning hours from a local university.  They were in the process of suffering major water damage in one of the important administrative offices on campus.  Not only was water pouring in, soaking walls and carpeting, but important records and documents were starting to become compromised.  They were in dire need of immediate assistance.

Our emergency-ready technicians mobilized, and arrived on scene within the hour and began remediation.  First, we extracted the standing water to prevent any more damage from occurring.  The water is pumped out, and hard to reach areas are handled manually.  Next, we set up an array of industrial strength fans and dehumidifiers to dry the area out.  The cardboard boxes of documents were transported back to our warehouse, where we were able to salvage most of the contents.

Whatever your emergency is, SERVPRO of Stamford is ready to respond.  We have the equipment, skills, and experience to get the job done.

Protect Your Business Against Ice Dams

2/3/2021 (Permalink)

Ice dams occur when indoor heating rises throughout your home, warming your roof. Ice and snow on the warmer portion of the roof melts and trickles downward until it hits the colder part of your roof, where it refreezes.Heading off ice before it can dam is the best way to keep your roof safe in the winter. The best way to do this is to keep areas like your roof, attic, and eaves a steady temperature. This prevents snow from melting and refreezing into heavy ice at the edges of your roof. This can be achieved by doing some or all of the following steps.

  • Make sure that the top floor of your business is sufficiently insulated.  If your business has an attic or storage space, maintain proper insulation there as well.
  • Make sure that the areas directly exposed to the elements are properly ventilated.
  • Seal and insulate ducts, especially those that lead to exhausts near the roof.  These can affect temperature fluctuation, leading to ice that melts and refreezes in unwanted areas.

If you want to mitigate the risk of ice dams at your business, follow the above steps.  If damage has already occurred, call SERVPRO of Stamford.  We have decades of experience remediating damage from ice dams.  We can be reached 24/7 at 203.324.1642.

Are You At Risk For Snow-Related Roof Damage?

2/2/2021 (Permalink)

Roof overloading is the term used when enough snow piles up on a roof, causing structural damage.  For the average roof, four feet of fresh snow, or two feet of old compacted snow puts you at risk for damage.  These conditions are somewhat rare, but not impossible.  There are other circumstances that could negatively affect your roof under the weight of snow.  The factors that determine how much weight your roof can hold are numerous.

Roof Age

Houses that have been built more recently will be better guarded against overloading, as materials and methods have evolved to suit the conditions.  However, if your home or business is older construction, older materials and wear and tear can lead to increased risk of damage occurring.  Perform routine checks of your roof to ensure that it is structurally sound, and that shingles are secure.

Previous Damage

If you have experienced roof damage in the past, you may be at increased risk of overloading and leaking.  Most roofs are repaired properly, but some are not.  If materials have been compromised over time, they may not be able to hold the same amount of weight as if they had been properly secured the first time.  If you have had previous roof damage, you should also perform routine checks, or have a contractor inspect the area.

If you suspect that your roof is at risk of failing, call a contractor as soon as possible.  And if you have already suffered damage, call SERVPRO of Stamford.  We can remediate any damage that has occurred, and can rebuild your roof to prevent future damage from occurring.

The Best Winter Storm Defense Is Being Prepared

1/19/2021 (Permalink)

While Fairfield County has experienced somewhat of a mild winter, a winter storm can still happen at any time.  A winter storm can cause damage of many kinds.  Freezing temperatures, heavy snow, and ice buildup are all things that can wreak havoc on your home.  But you can prepare beforehand to minimize the damage that you and your home are susceptible to.  Use the following tips to be prepared:

  • Maintain your furnace, which will lower your chance of a puffback.
  • Make sure your gutters are clear of debris like leaves and sticks.  This can cause ice damming when it clings to objects in the gutters.  Damming can cause your gutters to fall down or cause water to run back into your house.
  • Allow air to circulate around your pipes by leaving cabinet doors ajar.
  • Let your kitchen faucet and shower drip. While annoying, it can mean the difference between a pipe bursting or not.
  • Consider having your pipes insulated.

When a winter storm occurs, be prepared for the worst.  In the event that preparation does not fully protect you from mother nature, SERVPRO of Stamford is here for you.  When response time is critical, we promise to be on scene as soon as possible.  With 24/7 service available, we can make that happen.  Call us at 203.324.1642 in an emergency, or to learn more about our services.

Pay Attention If You Are Going On Vacation

1/19/2021 (Permalink)

This time of year is very popular for residents of Fairfield County to go on vacation.  The craziness of the holidays is over, and people are looking to escape the harsh temperatures with warmer weather.  But while you are basking in the sun, your home could be at risk for water damage related to winter weather.  We see it every year; people who go away for a period of time, only to return to a home that has extensive water damage.  When pipes become too cold, or rapidly change temperature, they can burst.  So how do you guard against this happening to you?

  • Leave your thermostat on at a low temperature to keep sensitive areas of your home warm enough.  Most experts recommend 55 degrees.
  • Leave doors open to promote airflow between areas of the house.  This will prevent one area from becoming too cold.  You can also leave areas under sinks open, to expose those pipes to warmer air.
  • Ask a friend or neighbor to check in on your house.  Even better, have someone house-sit for you.  They can keep an eye on everything.  In the event that any damage does occur, they will notice it long before you return from your vacation, and can stop more damage from occurring.

If you need water damage remediation services at your home or business, call SERVPRO of Stamford.  We have the knowledge, experience, and tools to restore you to preloss conditions.  We are available 24/7 at 203.324.1642.

What Is An Emergency Ready Profile?

1/14/2021 (Permalink)

Imagine this: You own a commercial building or retail space.  At 2AM, a flood occurs in your space, and you are alerted to the issue.  You know that you need professional help, and that the longer it takes for a response on scene, the more damage that happens.

That is where the SERVPRO Emergency Ready Profile (ERP) comes in. This is a document that can save precious time when immediate response to an emergency is important. It can save valuable time, which saves you money in the end.  That’s because it contains all the important information about your particular business, so that our crew, and other first responders can do their job quickly and efficiently.  This limits the extent of damage, meaning less cost to you.

But how does it work?

First, SERVPRO of Stamford sends someone out to compile all the pertinent info.  These are items such as location of water shutoffs, gas shutoffs, elevator controls, and sprinkler shutoffs.  We also gather contact information for companies that supply your utilities, in case they need to be contacted.  In the event of an emergency, our crew can reference your ERP for rapid response.

If you would like to schedule an ERP appointment, please call SERVPRO of Stamford at 203.324.1642. We offer this service free of charge, and the entire process should take less than an hour.

A New Year’s Resolution That Matters

1/12/2021 (Permalink)

It’s a new year, which means many of us are trying our best to stick to our New Year’s resolutions.  Whether you want to eat better, lose weight, or read more, resolutions are often tough to maintain.  But SERVPRO of Stamford encourages you to make a change that doesn't take a long time, and is relatively easy.  Make a fire escape plan for your family.  You can find resources online, but here are the main things to focus on:

  • Make a fire escape plan, complete with a map of your house, and the best ways out of every area.  It is important to include children so that they know what to do.
  • Work with your children on proper safety maneuvers.
    • Stop, drop, and roll
    • Staying low to avoid smoke
    • Using a pillow or clothing to cover your face, to prevent smoke inhalation
  • You may be displaced for a while, and will need essential items. Make a fire emergency kit with these items for afterwards. You can keep these in your car so they will be available outside the home. You can find more info at ready.gov

If you experience any fire in your home, get your family to safety as soon as possible.  Once everyone is out, call SERVPRO of Stamford. We have the knowledge and specialized tools to remediate the damage.

What Is The Best Way To Dry Stamford Hardwood Floors?

1/11/2021 (Permalink)

Installing hardwood floors all through the home has become commonplace lately. It adds a nice touch to homes, and actually provides a very durable flooring.  Many people have even installed wood flooring in kitchens and bathrooms.  When exposed to standing water, though, hardwood floors can become compromised relatively quickly.  Because wood floors are now being installed in areas with higher risk of water damage, we see more and more floors being irreversibly damaged.  From cracking to warping, the issue needs to be dealt with fast to minimize or eliminate any damage.

So what is the best way to dry your hardwood floors?  Call SERVPRO of Stamford, and let us take care of it for you.  SERVPRO of Stamford serves Fairfield County, and is available 24/7 for water damage remediation. With over 30 years of experience, we know how to return your home or business to preloss condition.  Our technicians have a wealth of knowledge, and use the latest equipment, such as floor drying systems, to dry your home.

What To Do If The Power Goes Out

12/31/2020 (Permalink)

Recently, Connecticut suffered widespread power outages due to wind and storm effects.  Do you have a plan for a power outage at your home? Getting prepared now, before one happens, will make any future outage more manageable and ultimately safer.  Beyond the annoyance of not being able to check Facebook or take a hot shower, a power outage can present safety issues. Food can go bad, certain medical facilities or devices may not be in operation, and water can become tainted. Use these helpful tips to prepare yourself:

  • Create a list of every vital power-using item in your home.  Things like your refrigerator should be on this list, where something like video games should not.  Stock batteries for items that can use them.
  • If you are on a medication that needs to be refrigerated, make sure that it maintains the proper temperature after the power goes out.
  • Do your best to keep any refrigerators/freezers closed until power is restored. Stock non-perishable food and water to consume in the meantime. Check food temperatures to make sure no food has spoiled.
  • If you have access to a generator, remember to operate it a safe distance from your home to avoid inhaling fumes.

Deep-Fry Turkey Safety Tips

11/25/2020 (Permalink)

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time for family and friends to come together. As with any cooking, there is a risk for fire damage to occur.  One risky, but also equally tasty Thanksgiving tradition is deep frying your turkey.  It produces extra juicy meat and has a crispy skin that everyone loves.  But turkey fryers pose serious fire risk if not handled properly.  If this is the way that you will be frying your turkey this year, follow these tips to keep your family and home safe this holiday.

  • Always keep fryers a safe distance away from trees and other structures.
  • Make sure the turkey is fully thawed and dry before cooking. Ice or water that mixes into the hot oil can cause flare-ups.
  • Place the fryer on a level surface, and avoid moving it once it's in use.
  • Follow the manufacturer's instructions to avoid overfilling. Oil can ignite when it makes contact with the burner.
  • Choose a smaller turkey for frying. A bird that's 8 to 10 pounds is best; pass on turkeys over 12 pounds.
  • Never leave fryers unattended.
  • If you notice the oil is smoking, turn the fryer off.
  • Turn off the burner before lowering the turkey into the oil. Once the turkey is submerged, turn the burner on.
  • DO NOT use water or a garden hose on a fire related to Turkey Fryers.
  • Keep children and pets away from the fryer at all times.
  • Once finished, carefully remove the pot from the burner, place it on a level surface and cover to let the oil cool overnight before disposing.

If you do happen to have any fire or smoke damage, please call SERVPRO of Stamford as soon as possible.  We have over 30 years of experience remediating this type of damage.

Power Surges And Electrical Fires

11/23/2020 (Permalink)

A power surge is a spike in your structure's electrical flow that is generally very rapid - about half a second. The extra power flow is quick, but it can harm large and small electrical devices alike. In extraordinary cases, a power surge can even cause sparks that can lead to a fire.

A number of different things can cause such electrical spikes to occur:

Wiring Issues

You have an extensive network of wiring throughout your Norwalk home or business.  If a portion of that wiring is faulty, or under-installed, it is more likely to cause issues surrounding a power surge.  Older homes and buildings are even more at risk for this type of electrical fire. If you own an older home, make sure that all of your wiring is up to date and installed properly.

Lightning Events

Even a small bolt of lightning carries more than enough electrical power to overrun your electrician system and network of appliances. In the event of a heavy storm, be attentive to appliances that make noises or strange odors.

Household Power Fluctuations

We all have larger appliances such as generators, central air systems, and air conditioning units.  When these either power on or off, the change in flow of power can cause a short circuit that can produce sparks.

Use this information to guard yourself against fires that can result from electrical overflows.  If you do suffer a fire, call SERVPRO of Stamford.  We have the knowledge and specialized tools to remediate the damage.

Labor Day Fire Safety Tips

8/26/2020 (Permalink)

Labor Day means cookouts, fireworks, and even campfires as people take advantage of one of the last warm weekends of the year.

It is definitely relaxing and fun to enjoy a backyard fire with friends and loved ones, but it’s also important to make sure that everyone involved stays safe by practicing a few easy fire protection and prevention tips:

Remember this list of four Labor Day fire safety tips:

  1. Keep a bucket of water close by. On the off chance that something floating out of your fire catches nearby items on fire, you don't want to have to run to get water to put it out.  With water right there, you can quickly and safely extinguish the issue.
  2. Don’t let barbecue grease accumulate. Built up grease and food on a grill grate has a high likelihood of igniting. Before, during, and after using your grill, clean the grate using a wire brush.
  3. Inspect the area around your BBQ and campfire.  Make sure to keep as many flammable items away from your grill or fire as possible.  Paper plates and napkins catching on fire are a leading cause of fire damage during Labor Day weekend.  This is especially important if you are grilling near your house or on a deck.
  4. Completely extinguish the fire when you are finished. Never leave a grill unattended after cooking, and never go to sleep without ensuring that it is fully out.  A breeze can send embers that are still hot into the air, and they could land on your roof or other parts of your home, leading to a fire.

If you happen to have any fire damage to your home or business, call SERVPRO of Stamford today at 203.324.1642.

What Is Wall Ghosting?

8/5/2020 (Permalink)

Fire damage comes in many shapes and sizes. Obviously, a large fire in a home or business can cause structural damage, water damage from firefighting efforts, and loss of personal items. But a smaller fire can also cause issues that may be annoying and unsightly. You don't even need to have an open flame for this type of fire damage to occur.

One such instance is discoloration on ceilings and walls, that may present itself as lines or dots, often along studs behind the drywall. This is called “ghosting” or “thermal tracking.” Soot from a small fire will adhere to points on ceilings and walls where the temperature is cooler. When a fire occurs, the soot output is very high, so there is an abundance of carbon particles that will discolor the material that it lands on.

As mentioned above, you don't need to have an emergency to experience ghosting. Common household causes include candles, fireplaces, wood stoves, and tobacco smoke. All of these put soot into the air, and over time, can lead to discoloration of surfaces in your home or business.

Whatever the reason that your walls become discolored, SERVPRO of Stamford can help. We are experienced in remediating all types of discoloration that occurs from any heat source, whether it is an emergency or not. Give us a call at 203.324.1642 today.

When Your Roof Is Damaged In A Storm, What Do You Do?

8/3/2020 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Stamford for any type of storm-related damage to your home’s roof. We are always ready and available to help.

In the last couple weeks, we have seen significant storms occur in the Stamford area, with high winds and lots of rain. With another couple tropical storms on the horizon, homeowners need to be prepared. Water damage from a storm may result in many ways, but the main two are from rising groundwater and holes in a roof causing rainwater to pour in. The latter is a very serious issue.  A large amount of water can flood into your home from above.  This can soak insulation, degrade drywall, and cause electrical faults.  Due to these factors, roof repair is very important.

SERVPRO of Stamford Can Repair Punctured And Broken Roofs

Often, our team will deploy temporary measures like tarps to quickly stop any further damage from occurring.  Because the water comes from above, it may pick up harmful particles from every layer that it passes through as gravity brings it down.  This can be foam insulation, fiberglass insulation, and even animal droppings. All of these contaminants will then pool on the floors, which can cause permanent discoloration to wood floors, furniture, and carpets.

The structure may become compromised as well. Ceilings, walls, and floors may become waterlogged, leading to lingering moisture that is prone to mold growth. Materials from the ceiling may also fall down if not properly dealt with.

SERVPRO has certified technicians for storm damage in the Stamford area ready to respond right away.  We examine and assess the damage, and create a custom remediation plan for your unique situation. Our teams are available 24/7 to help homeowners whose homes have been damaged by storms and experienced flooding.

5/12/2020 (Permalink)

The state of Connecticut is allowing a number of businesses to reopen in a couple weeks. With plenty of employees returning to the office, safety measures must be taken to ensure no spike in coronavirus cases occurs. Business owners must protect their employees, and employees must protect themselves. So what steps can employers take to provide a safe work environment?

The measures don’t look unlike those taken in homes:

  1. Encourage routine hand washing with real soap
  2. Place hand sanitizer in high-traffic areas around the building
  3. Use disinfectant wipes to sanitize items at work stations that get the most use.  These can be mouses, keyboards, and kitchen items.
  4. Encourage employees to wear disposable gloves.
  5. Encourage those who are sick to stay at home.

These measures will go a long way to protect you, your employees, and your business.  If you suspect that contamination has occurred, or you know for sure, send employees home, and call professionals to address the issue.  SERVPRO of Stamford offers this service, and does so in cooperation with CDC guidelines and best practices.

Coronavirus And Renting

4/20/2020 (Permalink)

If you are a renter in Fairfield County, you may be unsure of what your future holds.  This could be due to a loss of income, availability of new rentals, or hesitancy to see new places.  Read below to learn more about your options in the coming weeks.

How can I find out if my landlord is addressing health issues?

Some complexes have closed their offices to reduce the spread of COVID-19, but are available by telephone, email, or their online portal. Check if there are flyers or messages posted around your leasing office, or if  there’s an emergency number or additional contact information posted anywhere. Leasing management offices may have reduced in-person support and/or are only responding to emergency cases, so their response may be limited or delayed.

What if one of my neighbors has contracted COVID-19?

Property management does not have to share an active COVID-19 diagnosis with other renters due to privacy rules and regulations.  You should take action to protect yourself, such as practicing social distancing and frequently washing your hands.

I have COVID-19. Do I need to tell my landlord?

Due to the same set of rules, you are not obligated to inform your landlord about a positive COVID-19 diagnosis. You can let them know so that they can adequately protect other residents and staff.

Can I be evicted?

No. According to CT.gov, “All landlords are prohibited from issuing a notice to quit or beginning eviction proceedings before July 1, 2020, except for serious nuisance, such as physically harming another tenant or the landlord.”

What if I can’t pay my rent?

In the state of CT, landlords are required to give an extended grace period, up to 60 days in some cases.

Disaster Restoration: A Brief Overview

3/23/2020 (Permalink)

Damage Remediation Snapshot

While some think Stamford damage remediation is as simple as taking damaged stuff and disposing of it, the procedure isn't so basic. Truth be told, it is an unpredictable procedure that requires safety measures, modern techniques, and specialized skills. It additionally requires that hazardous areas of the structure are cleaned properly, so they never again present dangers or security issues to occupants. Cleaning personal possessions is also an important piece of this process.

Fire

Following a fire, your air may stay polluted with carbon monoxide for a couple of hours or even a few days. On the off chance that you go back inside your home while these hazardous poisons are in the air, you could damage your lungs. This is one motivation behind why Stamford homeowners trust SERVPRO of Stamford with their damage restoration needs.  We know how to safely navigate these situations for both technicians and inhabitants.

Water

Floods and fires both involve water, which present both the need for immediate extraction of the water, as well as the need to prevent secondary damage like mold. SERVPRO has the tools to address both needs in a timely manner.

In spite of the fact that you might be enticed to deal with your damage by yourself, doing so can present numerous dangers, both to you and your home. Rather than facing these challenges alone, call SERVPRO of Stamford.  We pride ourselves on both our customer service and our restoration process.

Care For Your Memories

3/23/2020 (Permalink)

When water damage strikes Stamford homes, personal belongings in storage are often affected.  Many times, this includes photos that hold unmeasurable sentimental value. From baby photos to wedding pictures, these memories are precious, and should be saved at all costs.

SERVPRO of Stamford knows this, and takes the utmost care to locate these items and preserve them if possible.  We do our absolute best to save everything that holds sentimental value, including these photographs.

We “pack out” the items that have become wet, which means that we carefully box them up and transport them to our facility.  There, they are immediately catalogued, inventoried, and then the drying process begins. Each photo is separated, placed into a drying chamber, which extracts the water from the surface.  Once dry, we again carefully store them at our facility until the remediation process is complete at your home. At that point, we return your dried and cleaned items back to you.

To prevent these items from becoming dry in the first place, store photos and other precious items like documents in plastic containers that won't allow water inside in the event of a water damage.

Specialized Odor Removal By SERVPRO Of Stamford

3/23/2020 (Permalink)

There are many causes for foul odors. These can include:

  • Mold growth
  • Lingering garbage
  • Body odor
  • Cigarette smoke
  • Soot residue
  • Animal waste

SERVPRO of Stamford uses a piece of equipment called an ozone generator. This machine works by producing ozone molecules which break down any other molecule that they come into contact with.  When the ozone encounters any odor-causing molecules, it eliminates it, causing the smell to dissipate. This is far and away a better method than other deodorization techniques that are available.

If you were to search about these machines, you may encounter some negative material regarding their safety.  In one sense, that is correct. Because the machine produces ozone molecules that can be harmful if breathed in, an ozone generator can be potentially harmful.  But when used properly, it is a very safe and effective deodorization tool. We contain the affected area, and ensure that no people or pets enter the area until the machine has been removed.  Furthermore, we circulate fresh air before anyone is allowed in.

Regardless of the origin, SERVPRO of Stamford can handle it.  We have a unique and thorough process that ensures complete deodorization of any smell.

Cyber Security And COVID-19

3/13/2020 (Permalink)

This public health emergency has provided an opportunity for increased cyber-attacks, phishing attempts and other scams. Please be extremely mindful when opening links or searching online. Remind your friends and family to do the same.

The CT Intelligence Center (CTIC) was recently made aware of a malicious website pretending to be a live Covid-19 infections map similar to the real map posted by John Hopkins University.

The fake map which is located at corona-virus-map[.]com is currently downloading harmful software onto visitors' computers. The malware, found within a file called corona.exe, carries dangerous functionality, with the ability to steal credentials, payment card numbers, cookies and sensitive browser-based data and exfiltrate that information to a command-and control server

The real online map posted by John Hopkins University has never contained any malware.

Recommendations:

  • Increased cyber awareness when searching the internet for information regarding the Covid-19 disease.
  • Users should be suspicious of emails from unknown senders, and emails that request sensitive information.
  • Users should not open email attachments from unknown senders.
  • Be aware of links shared through social media sites.

What Can Be Damaged In A Stamford Flood?

3/12/2020 (Permalink)

While considering flooding isn't nice to think about, it is something that all property holders ought to prepare for because of how frequent it has become lately.

There are numerous reasons for flooding just as numerous harms a flood can cause. To give you a thought of the most widely recognized harms to know about, we have assembled this guide so you can be more ready. Read to see the various ways a flood can damage your home or business.

Foundation Damage - The ground underneath a home can become saturated during a flood, causing movement and expansion. This can change the earth below the foundation, which can lead to cracks occurring.  These can be in either the walls or the floor. Once this has happened, it is a costly repair to fix.

Drywall Damage and Mold - While some drywall will absolutely need to be replaced, not all walls and ceilings will look like they are affected. But if drywall is even slightly wet, it can retain moisture.  This can lead to mold growth down the road.

Insulation Saturation - Just as drywall can be affected, the insulation behind it can also become waterlogged.  This can also harbor moisture that can lead to mold growth. It also greatly reduces the effectiveness of the insulation layer.  This can lead to increased heating and cooling costs, as well as increased risk for burst pipes in cold weather.

If you suffer water damage as a result of a storm or flood, call SERVPRO of Stamford today.

Sump Failures in Stamford

3/11/2020 (Permalink)

When you install a sump pump, you may forget that it is there.  It is an important piece of equipment that keeps your home or business dry.  A sump pump works by taking groundwater and excess rainwater and directing it away from your foundation.  This prevents flooding and moisture in your basement. A sump pump consists of many components. If it malfunctions, and the pump fails to work, you are at significant risk for water damage.  Here are two reasons that your sump pump could cease to work.

Improper Installation

Incorrect installation of sump pump can lead to major issues immediately, as well as down the road. Each sump pump is different, and instructions must be strictly adhered to.  If not followed exactly, you are at risk for water damage in your basement. The person installing your pump should install a check valve, which ensures that the flow of water is directed away from your home or business.  If not put in correctly, the motor will run, but no water will be pumped out.

Additionally, the pump needs to be installed on the right foundation, free of sediment or gravel.  If present, it could enter the pump itself, causing malfunction due to blockage.

Poor Maintenance

Although your sump pump is always working, and rarely requires servicing, routine checks should be done.  Every few months, you should inspect your sump pump. Have your pump checked for blockages in the line, connection to a secondary power source, and proper drainage. This should also be done in anticipation of a storm.  This will ensure that your basement stays dry if heavy rain occurs.

SERVPRO of Stamford specializes in remediating water damage, and is ready to respond 24/7 to your needs.  When water damage strikes, response time is important, so call us as soon as you notice the problem.

The Three Categories of Commercial Damage

3/11/2020 (Permalink)

When water, fire, or weather damage occurs in a business, many factors determine remediation techniques, and the equipment employed.  When our project managers assess the area, they will categorize the damage into one of three different levels. Learn more about what type of damage could affect your business below.

Level 1 - 15,000 square feet or less affected

This level of damage is used when the entirety of a small structure suffers damage.  This could be a small business, restaurant, church, or small commercial property. This level of loss can also be one smaller portion of a much larger building.

Level 2 - 15,000 to 60,000 square feet affected

This level of damage is used when the entirety of a medium-sized structure suffers damage.  This could be a multi-family property, commercial warehouse, sporting venue, or small apartment building.  Similar to Level 1, this level of loss can also be a medium-sized portion of a much larger structure.

Level 3 - Greater than 60,000 square feet affected

These are referred to as “large losses.” While these are less common, they are by far the most financially costly and disruptive to everyday life.  That is because they occur in large buildings, so the damage is far more extensive. These occur if the entirety of the property is affected, and the property is very spacious. Examples of these are large commercial buildings, high-rise apartment buildings, hospitals, and schools. We would also use this term if multiple adjacent storefronts or smaller buildings were affected at the same time.

Carbon Monoxide Stats And Safety

3/9/2020 (Permalink)

According to the Center For Disease Control, more than 400 Americans die, 20,000 visit the hospital and 4,000 are admitted to the hospital due to carbon monoxide poisoning every year. Carbon monoxide is invisible and odorless, which makes it extremely dangerous. Moderate carbon monoxide exposure can lead to a range of symptoms.  The severity of the symptoms varies with the level of exposure that you suffer. Moderate exposure may lead to headaches, nausea, or dizziness. If further exposure occurs, vomiting, confusion and loss of consciousness. It is highly undetectable, and even has the ability to cause death in some cases.

The first step to preventing this from happening in your home or business is to install a carbon monoxide detector.

Additionally, follow these simple tips to stay safe from carbon monoxide:

  • Have any gas or coal-burning appliances serviced and inspected by a professional on a regular basis.
  • Do not use portable flameless chemical heaters indoors
  • Have your chimney serviced and inspected by a professional on a regular basis.
  • Never use your gas oven to heat your home or business
  • Never run a gas-powered generator inside your home
  • Never run your car in an attached garage, even if you have opened the garage door.  Running cars are the leading cause of carbon monoxide poisoning in homes.

If you feel that you may be suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning, immediately go outside to get some fresh air.  This could be the difference between being mildly sick and far more dangerous results.

Food Safety After A Flood

3/9/2020 (Permalink)

Use caution when consuming food after water damage

Flooding in a home or business can destroy many things, from the structure, carpeting, documents, and furniture.  One thing that most people overlook is food items, especially when stored in a basement. While you can clean and disinfect some commercially canned goods, most food should be discarded if flood water or other contaminated water has touched them. If you decide to disinfect your canned goods, use extreme caution. If you are not sure about the safety of any food item, discard it.

The following should never be saved after coming into contact with contaminated water:

  • Fresh produce
  • Containers of nuts
  • Seasonings
  • Sugar, salt, coffee and tea.
  • Paper, plastic, cloth, fiber or cardboard boxes of food.

If your home or business has water damage, call SERVPRO of Stamford.  Our trained professionals have years of experience, and know how to quickly and properly remediate water damage.

What Is Business Interruption Insurance?

2/6/2020 (Permalink)

When your business suffers any type of significant damage, the first thought is getting your business operational again.  While you may have insurance that covers the property and items inside, every day that passes represents lost revenue.  This can set a business owner back even more than the physical damage would ever do.

There is a step that you can take to protect yourself against the latter of these issues in the form or business interruption insurance.  This type of insurance covers the loss of income between the initial disaster and when the business is operational again.  It is designed to put the business in the same financial situation it would have been in had the damage never happened.

If this is something that you would like to the insurance that you carry on your business, contact your insurance agent to put it in place.  It could mean the difference between a temporary setback and an event that your business struggles to recover from.

How SERVPRO of Stamford Gets Rid of Flood Odors

2/5/2020 (Permalink)

After a flood or other water damage in your home or business, foul odors often linger, even after the visible water is extracted. Unfortunately, these odors can mean there is mold growth present.  These smells will not disappear with time alone. SERVPRO of Stamford is skilled in removing these odors completely, and use two distinct steps to do so.

1. Making Sure The Area Is Actually Dry

For very small water damages, opening a window or running a household fan can do the trick.  But when there is anything more than that, industrial solutions are necessary.  We utilize specialized equipment to ensure that no moisture from the damage remains in the affected area.  Using a combination of high-powered fans and dehumidifiers, we make sure affected material, as well as the air has returned to preloss levels.

2. Using Disinfectants On Affected Areas

As discussed above, many post-damage odors come from mold growth.  To make sure that this does not occur, SERVPRO of Stamford uses an array of disinfectants on any area that may need it. These solutions treat the area, and effectively stops any mold growth before it occurs, as well as eliminating any spores that have already begun to develop.

SERVPRO of Stamford has the skilled technicians and specialized equipment to get the job done the right way, which prevents the risk of secondary damage.

Important Commercial Post-Fire Steps

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

After you suffer a fire at your business, you may be wondering how to proceed.  Once the first responders have cleared the scene, you are left with what is left after the fire is extinguished.  A return to normalcy is what anyone will be thinking about, but there are three important steps to take to make sure that your restoration process goes as smoothly as possible.

Contact You Insurance Company

When you have a fire, 911 should always be your first call.  Next, you need to call your insurer.  Getting them in the loop ASAP is important, as they will send an adjuster to you to inspect the damage that much quicker.  This will get that process started, which will ultimately lead to a quicker resolution.

Do Not Disturb The Scene

We know that seeing your business in shambles will make you only think about cleaning up the mess.  That being said, do not move or clean anything.  The insurance adjuster needs to see the damage so that they can document it for your claim.  If the adjuster cannot adequately see the full damage, it can affect your insurance claim.

Call SERVPRO of Stamford

SERVPRO of Stamford provides 24-hour emergency service and is dedicated to being faster to any-sized disaster. We can respond immediately to your emergency and have the expertise to handle your restoration or cleaning needs.

Protect Yourself Against Flood Damage

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

The Fairfield County area has seen major flood events, as recently as Hurricane Sandy, which devastated our coastal areas. If you live on the water, there is enormous risk of partial or total loss of your home, as well as possessions.  Mitigating that risk, and protesting your home is of paramount importance.  Two actions can be taken to properly safeguard you and your home against flood damage.

The first step is to determine the level of risk that your home is at, depending on where it it located.  There are online resources that will show your home, and places it in one of three flood hazard areas, sorted by risk level.  There are a few different ratings that your property can fall under.  Search here to see which area your home or business falls in.

  1. Special Flood Hazard Area: the area that will be inundated by a flood event having a 1-percent chance of being equaled or exceeded in any given year.
  2. Moderate flood hazard area: the areas between the limits of the base flood and the 0.2-percent-annual-chance of flooding
  3. Minimal flood hazard: areas outside the Special Flood Hazard Area and higher than the elevation of the 0.2-percent-annual-chance

Depending on where your property is designated, you can take steps to physically alter your property.  You can also purchase flood insurance, an additional rider on your homeowners policy that will protect you in the event of flooding.

If you do suffer water damage as a result of a storm or flood, call SERVPRO of Stamford immediately. We are ready to respond 24/7 with state-of-the-art equipment and knowledgeable technicians to get the job done right.

Using Sprinkler Pipes To Hang Clothes

2/3/2020 (Permalink)

When you go on vacation or stay at a hotel for any reason, you may hang garments and other items in the closet.  If you run out of closet space, you may look for other spots to hang items. One such spot that you may be tempted to hang from is the sprinkler pipe in the room.  Avoid doing this at all costs.  One of two things may happen.  First, you may inadvertently damage the sprinkler head, which can cause the water to flow out, causing major flooding and other water damage.  Depending on the hotel, you may be liable for this damage.  One hotel employee tells of an instance of this happening in their building.

“On their last day, because a small number of the church group had to stay an additional day, some rooms had to have extra people bunk up in rooms that were already over capacity. One of these guests on the third floor couldn't find adequate space to hang their clothes. What they thought would work is trying to hang their clothes on the fire sprinkler hanging from the ceiling.

It worked for 5 seconds before it ripped the sprinkler clean off.

The water gushed out and made it's way to the 3rd floor stairs and elevator. It completely flooded the 3rd, 2nd, and 1st floors as well as setting off all sprinklers in the hotel, so 4th and 5th also got a little wet.

After all was said and done, it ended up costing a little under $15,000 in damages and repairs."

Second, even if you damage the system, you may inhibit the system working as intended.  The system is designed to disperse water when the sprinkler head reaches 155 degrees.  If there is something in the way, there will be a delay.  In the event of a fire, this can increase the extent of damage, as well as putting lives at risk.

Control Your Thermostat To Prevent Burst Pipes

1/20/2020 (Permalink)

As colder temperatures are finally rolling in, the risk of having a pipe burst in your home or business goes up exponentially.  Water in the pipes freezes, causing expansion that cracks the pipe and allows water to flow freely into the floor below.  This can lead to massive damage to the building, but can also destroy sentimental and important items like photos, documents, and other keepsakes.

One easy way to lessen the risk of this occurring is to keep your thermostat at a low level when you are not home.  Do some research to see what temperature makes sense for your home, depending on where pipes are located, and how much insulation is present.  Whether this is while you are at work during the day, or for vacations, the minimal increase in cost is well worth the devastation that a burst pipe can cause.

Should you suffer a water damage in your home or business, SERVPRO of Stamford is always here to help. Our experienced technicians are available 24/7 to provide emergency assistance.

Ice Safety Measures

1/20/2020 (Permalink)

As colder temperatures and snow storms are finally rolling in, ice is often left behind on sidewalks, stairs, and driveways. Freezing rain storms can also lead to formation of black ice. The risk of slipping and falling in these areas presents a real issue.  Here are some precautions and steps you can take to reduce your risk of falling and injuring yourself.

  • Walk slowly in areas that may have ice.  Keep in mind that black ice is extremely hard to see.
  • Use caution when getting in and out of vehicles.  Use the vehicle for balance if necessary.
  • Watch for slippery floors when entering buildings.  Alert building maintenance if you observe areas of ice formation.
  • Avoid carrying items. If you do begin to slip or fall, you want your hands free for balance and to break your fall if necessary.

Winterization Of Pipes

1/16/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage from freezing pipes are a common occurrence during the winter months. Water that flows through the pipes freeze, cause the pipe to burst, and water flows out, causing damage that can range from minor cleanup to massive flooding.  With colder weather on the horizon, make sure that your home is prepared to handle the freezing temperatures that may come.  Making sure your home is properly winterized is very important.

Many homeowners have water pipes that run in areas that are uninsulated, or do not have heat.  These can be areas such as garages or where pipes run very close to exterior walls.  Make sure that where necessary, pipes are wrapped in insulation or heating tape.

If you do happen to have water damage from freezing temperatures, give SERVPRO of Stamford a call.  We provide 24/7 emergency cleanup and water remediation.

Blood Donation Month

1/15/2020 (Permalink)

January is National Blood Donor Month, which is spearheaded by the American Red Cross.  SERVPRO of Stamford has a long history of working with the Red Cross, both as corporate partners, and also on a local level.  We have assisted them in events like their regular smoke alarm install events, where teams assemble to install arms free of charge to those who cannot afford new ones and are in need.

National Blood Donor Month has been in effect since January of 1970, to increase blood and platelet donations during the winter months. During this time, bad weather frequently leads to cancelled blood drives, and seasonal illnesses like the cold and flu results in the number of available donors decreasing.

Donating blood is an extremely important action that can be taken to save the lives of those around you.  If you have the time, and are in good health, please consider donating blood this month.

Fire Damage Encapsulation

1/13/2020 (Permalink)

This house suffered extensive fire damage after a firework landed on the second floor and ignited the wood. Fortunately, the structure was salvageable, although it did suffer major smoke and soot damage.

This produced a strong odor that needed to be eliminated as a part of the remediation process.  After debris was removed, we ice blasted the framework to remove soot and smoke damage from the beams. This removes a large amount of the odor, but another step can eradicate the smell altogether.

Once the wood was free of soot, our technicians encapsulated the affected areas. We apply a substance to the wood that protects the wood and seals in any lingering odor. This process masks smells caused by smoke and other carcinogens, and it also encapsulates some of the toughest stains that have soaked into the porous surfaces in the area.

Turkey Fryer Safety

11/27/2019 (Permalink)

Fire Caused By Deep Fried Turkey Fire Caused By Deep Fried Turkey

The allure of deep frying a turkey this Thanksgiving may lead many people to try this method that yields a very tasty alternative the traditional baked option.  But this method comes with many risks, both for your safety, as well as to your home.  Fryers can tip over relatively easily, spilling cooking oil, which can burn you easily.  Pouring too much oil into the fryer may also lead to the same outcome.  One precaution that causes the most fires is attempting to fry a turkey that has not fully thawed.  This causes the oil to become severely agitated, which can cause sever burns, as well as ignite any flammable material in the vicinity.  If this is the way you will be cooking your turkey this year, please review the information below so that you keep your family and property safe from fire damage.

  • NEVER attempt to deep fry a turkey indoors
  • Keep the fryer away from your house, and away from flammable materials
  • Do not fill the fryer with too much oil
  • Make sure that your turkey is fully thawed before frying

Fireplace Ash Disposal

11/20/2019 (Permalink)

Recently, firefighters were called to a trash fire that started when fireplace ashes were not properly disposed of. Prematurely discarding ashes, which can stay hot for hours, leads to numerous fires every year. Now that the weather is getting colder, people are turning to their fireplaces and wood burning stoves as a source of heat. Follow of these tips to make sure that you are taking the right precaution with your ashes to avoid any damage to you or your property.

1.) Make sure you allow the remaining wood and ash to completely cool off before removing or transporting them.
2.) Transfer the remaining wood and ashes to a metal bucket, preferably with a shovel or similar metal tool. Get the receptacle as close to the fireplace or stove as possible, as this will minimize any hot material to fall on combustible material and igniting.
3.) Wet down the contents of the bucket to absolutely ensure that no damage can occur. After these steps are followed, you can dispose of the ashes with your normal garbage.

Desiccant Dehumidifier: The Alternative to Common Dehumidifiers

8/23/2019 (Permalink)

What is a Desiccant Dehumidifier & What are the Advantages of Using One

Air contains water vapor, also known as humidity. Too much or too little humidity can be harmful to the human body and to the indoor home environment. An ideal indoor humidity is between 40% and 60%. Because mold grows where there is a lot moisture, running a dehumidifier in the areas of your home that have experienced water damage or that are naturally damp, such as a basement, can decrease the occurrence of mold by transforming the damp area into a dry area after only a couple of days.

What is a Desiccant Dehumidifier & How Does It Work?

Desiccant dehumidifiers are an alternative to common dehumidifiers. Unlike the common dehumidifier, which works by compressor and refrigerant, desiccant dehumidifiers are made up of five components, which do not include compression or a refrigerant: the desiccant itself, a rotor, a condenser, a heater, and one or more blowers.

The desiccant itself is a chemical that ADsorbs, versus absorbs, moisture. Adsorbing is holding onto the molecules of a gas or liquid as a thin film on the outside surface. Simply put, the desiccant pulls the moisture from the air and then releases it when heated. The rotor, or the rotating drum, is made up of corrugated layers, as well as flat sheet layers coated with the desiccant. The moist air is filtered through this desiccant rotor, which processes the warm humid air, absorbing the moisture. Then, the heater warms the humid air, which then condenses at room temperature and drips into a bucket.

Basically, the blower pulls in the humid air; the rotor absorbs the humidity; the heater dries out the air; the remaining moisture condenses into a collection bucket. It’s a mechanical process with no harmful exhaust.

SERVPRO of Stamford uses desiccant humidifiers when we remediate commercial damage. If you have any water damage in your Stamford home or business, do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Stamford.

Top Tips for Easy Prevention of Electrical Fires

8/14/2019 (Permalink)

As one of the top causes of house fires, electrical fires can happen anywhere in the home. You don’t want to suffer fire damage or worse due to a preventable electrical risk. Follow these safety tips to prevent electrical fires, and if you have an older home, you may want to hire a certified electrician to look at your wiring.

Plugging in or Unplugging Items - Safety Tips:

  • First things first - Cover unused outlets with safety plugs if there are young children present. Or install outlets with spring-latch covers
  • Replace or repair loose-fitting plugs, which can cause a shock or fire hazard
  • Replace missing or broken wall plates to cover wiring and components
  • When pulling a plug from the wall, hold the plug securely. Otherwise, you can wear out the cord, increasing the risk of a short circuit, an electric shock, or a fire
  • Minimize use of multi-outlet extenders, power bars, and surge protectors. They pose the risk of overloading a single circuit
  • Only use extension cords on a temporary basis. Ask a certified electrician to install additional electrical outlets

The Importance of Board-Ups

8/6/2019 (Permalink)

Every year, more than a million fires are reported worldwide. As homeowners, we install fire alarms, equip our property with fire extinguishers and take all measures to prevent one in our Stamford home or business. Sometimes, because of these measures, the house is saved from total destruction, but it needs to be restored before we resume living in it. We need to move to a safe place until the doors and windows of the house are restored. Therefore, it becomes necessary to board up the house after the fire because it becomes prone to various threats. Flames can destroy the doors and windows leaving the interiors vulnerable to the outside elements such as rain, wind, animals, and others from further exacerbating the damage. Boarding up the doors and windows of the fire-damaged house prevents it from external factors such as the environment along with the more feared factors such as looting. After a fire, the building becomes easily accessible to thieves and vandals as they can easily slip into through the damaged doors and windows. Boarding up the property makes it far more difficult to gain access. Boarding the building also makes the fire cleanup process much easier.  Items that cannot be put on sale but can be further used after proper assessment and cleaning and these can also be useful for insurance purposes.

One more important aspect to board up a house after a fire is to prevent human traffic into the house. This is because it further escalates the soot damage. The human intervention causes the soot to be embedded into the carpeting which further makes it difficult to restore them to a good and reusable condition. Therefore, it is highly recommended to get the house boarded up quickly. Board-up services are offered by SERVPRO of Stamford as part of our remediation and rebuild process.

Different Types of Storm Damage

8/3/2019 (Permalink)

Extreme storms can be terrifying and perilous, and wellbeing must be your first need. In the event that your town has seen serious issues, be cautious. In the event that you think your home has been fundamentally damaged or if flood hazard remains, don't go inside until an expert says it's protected. Putting in a couple of evenings at a companion's home or in a crisis haven is a little cost to pay.

Snow Storm Damage

Winter storms assault a significant part of the U.S. and Canada consistently, and zones that don't get hit with snow regularly manage ice storms and solidifying precipitation. When you're managing snowstorms, lake impact storms and snow squalls, damage to your home can incorporate rooftop and auxiliary damage from overwhelming snow just as damage to sash, outside funnels, and siding. These frigid storms regularly accompany high winds, which can fuel damage by making shingles loosen up. These storms can unleash destruction on utility lines.

At the point when ice storms hit, you may should be significantly more wary. These storms are described by leaving at any rate a fourth of an inch of ice on surfaces. They can make rooftops breakdown, trees to break and electrical cables to snap. Attempt to remain in your home until the ice storm has passed and prepared with food, water, supplies, and power sources.

Lightning and Thunderstorm Damage

Lightning storms can happen any place in the U.S., and they bring the danger of flames and extreme basic damage. Regardless of whether your lightning bars work appropriately by directing the vitality to the ground, it's conceivable to see damage to electrical wiring, machines, radio wires, satellite dishes, link or phone lines, and steel structure. Except if there are indications of flame, make certain to remain inside until the storm is over on the grounds that your home will secure you.

Thunderstorms accompany dangers regardless of whether you aren't hit by lightning. You could see flooding, hail, and high winds.

High Winds, Tornadoes and Hurricane Damage

High winds can happen for all intents and purposes anyplace, and thousands of tornadoes and hurricanes hit the U.S. consistently. Extreme winds are characterized as surpassing 50-60 mph. Damage from wind can be across the board and can influence your structure as well as encompassing landscaping and black-top. Know about the potential for falling trees and posts and damaged electrical cables, and deal with these issues immediately. After the storm, look at your property for basic damage to the home, including windows, siding, and rooftops. In the most extraordinary situations, rooftops can be passed clean over.

If you have any storm damage to your home or business, do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Stamford.

Why We Use State Of The Art Technology

3/25/2019 (Permalink)

When we are called to a water damage, it is essential to be able to rapidly determine the extent of water damage in a house or business.

Getting your home or business dry is crucial in the aftermath of water damage. With excess moisture, mold and mildew can develop and bacteria can multiply. That’s why SERVPRO of Stamford uses moisture meters during and after completion of water remediation work to ensure that structures are properly dried.

Moisture meters can reach areas that may otherwise be overlooked or not considered as being affected by moisture. These include areas such as basement walls, spaces between layers of drywall, concrete subfloors, and beneath carpet and tile. Identifying potential damage to these lesser-suspected areas can save thousands of dollars in repairs later.

SERVPRO of Stamford provides 24-hour emergency service and is dedicated to being faster to any-sized disaster. We can respond immediately to your emergency and have the expertise to handle your restoration or cleaning needs.

Hole In The Roof

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Even a small fire can dramatically affect your home.  One thing that people don’t realize is that in order to properly extinguish a fire, the fire department often has to damage the home in the process.  Two measures that cause damage to the home are sometimes taken.  First, a lot of water is often used to extinguish a fire, which causes water damage to the home.  The second measure is cutting a hole in the ceiling and roof so that heat and smoke can escape,  They do this so that cool air can flow into the house, allowing for easier and safer entry to put out the flames.  This picture shows one such hole.  As part of our rebuild process, we will fix this hole that was made by the firefighters.

SERVPRO of Stamford provides 24-hour emergency service and is dedicated to being faster to any-sized disaster. We can respond immediately to your emergency and have the expertise to handle your restoration or cleaning needs.

This picture shows mold present on the interior shudders.  These shudders along with the rest of the affected area was original dating back to the 1890s.  Our expert crew handled the challenge well, removing all visible mold and sealing the wood to prevent subsequent issues.  If you suspect or know you have mold, please do not hesitate to call us.

Flash Fire Damage

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

According to the National Fire Protection Association a “flash fire” is defined as a type of short-duration fire that spreads rapidly through a fuel, such as dust, gas, or the vapors of an ignitible liquid, without the production of damaging pressure. This is what it looks like when a flash fire occurs as a result of improper use of propane tanks.  One unit in this multi-family building exploded due to rapid flame movement throughout.  Once the fire department had left, our crew got to work restoring the property.  Please use extreme caution when using and storing flammable substances.  If you suffer a fire or smoke damage at your home or business, please do not hesitate to call us.

Ice Storms Can Lead To Damage

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

Ice storms can cause significant damage, if not directly, then indirectly.  This pictures shows how heavy ice ice, and the effect it can have on trees that it covers.  If you have trees around your house that have branches overhead, this could be a potentially damaging situation.  If ice forms around tree limbs, they can snap off and damage your home. This could lead to secondary issues like water damage or frozen pipes. While it is warm out, trim overhanging branches that could be large enough to cause damage to your rood or siding. If you have water damage, please do not hesitate to call us.

Dirt From Water Damage

2/4/2019 (Permalink)

If you have a water damage, sometimes it is not as easy as removing the water and drying everything out.  This low-income housing complex had a burst pipe on their second floor.  The water leaked down to the first floor, and carried with it a whole lot of dirt and debris.  The photo demonstrates just how much dirt the water stream actually brought with it. Our crew removed the water, dried everything out, and then washed the floors so that the customer was happy.  If you have water damage, please do not hesitate to call us.

Showroom Flooding

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

This was one of our trickiest jobs that we have taken on in recent history.  A pipe burst in a local art gallery and interior design showroom.  Due to the high value of many of the items in the business, we had to act extremely quickly to save them.  We were on scene within 30 minutes to begin extracting the water, and removing the valuable items. We set up our drying equipment to eradicate the remaining moisture and had them back in business in the shortest period of time.  If you have water in your business from a burst pipe, please call us.

Huge Water Extraction

1/31/2019 (Permalink)

This person called us with over a foot of water in their large finished basement.  We were on scene within minutes with our large water pump to extract the water.  Usually, we only need one hose to pull all the water out of any given structure.  There was so much water here that we had to use two hoses. Luis can be seen here making sure the water is flowing out properly to minimize the amount of time it took to remove all the water.  If you have water in your home or business from a storm, please call us.

Ceiling Removal Due To Storm Damage

1/31/2019 (Permalink)

This picture showcases the effects of not having a leak-proof roof.  This person had postponed re-shingling their roof.  But unfortunately, they experienced the effects of that decision.  Water leaked in over the family room and started to soak the furniture.  We were called to fix the situation, which required removing a portion of the ceiling to allow for proper drying.  Make sure that your roof is up-to-date, and you address any issues as soon as they arise. If you have water in your home or business from a storm, please call us.

Liquor Store Flooding

1/31/2019 (Permalink)

Recently, a local liquor store was going about their business when a piece of their ceiling tile fell onto the floor.  Over the next few hours, most of the ceiling had collapsed into the store.  Rain was causing the waterlogged material to become heavy and fall down.  This soaked a lot of the merchandise and business had to be halted for a long time.  We came in, removed the water and also carried out all the debris. If you have water in your business from a storm, please call us.

Acting Quickly May Save Your Belongings

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

When a basement floods, everything that is sitting on the floor gets wet.  Some things may be okay, but most of your belongings will become damaged, the extent of which only gets worse the longer they stay submerged.  Many times, if the water is pumped out and extracted quickly, some items can be saved, at least to some extent.  We specialize in large-scale water extraction, and can pump thousands of gallons of water in a timely manner.  This is a photo of a recent homeowner’s basement who called us.  With our equipment, we got the water out, and began the drying process.

Fire In The Garage

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

Recently, a fire broke out in a home and adjoining garage structure.  Fortunately, none of the inhabitants, one of which was a small dog, were hurt during the ordeal.  The fire consumed most of the interior, and spread rapidly into the garage, pictured here.  You can see just how hot the fire was, based on the damage to the car that was parked away from the house.  We responded quickly by boarding up the structure, and are now in the process of cleaning and deodorizing the interior. Once that step is done, the rebuild can proceed.

Mold Containment

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

Mold outbreaks are something to absolutely take seriously.  If mold spores become airborne, they can be inhaled.  This may lead to unwanted and harmful respiratory issues.  But when a mold damage occurs, it usually happens in one part of the home or business.  How do we manage this issue while safely and quickly removing mold? When dealing with mold, we build containment areas to be sure no spores are spread.  We use disposable plastic to keep the harmful particles out of unaffected areas.  This also allows for a minimal disturbance to the daily routine so that business and life can continue.

Leaky Roof No Match For Rainstorm

1/30/2019 (Permalink)

During a recent rainstorm, the roof leaked overnight at a local educational facility.  Unfortunately, the damage was not noticed until the following morning.  We were called in to fix the situation, which included extracting the water and dehumidifying the space once the bulk of the water was removed.  This photo does not show water that we pumped out.  It actually shows how much water we pulled out of the air with a dehumidifier.  All that moisture would have probably led to mold down the road if left untreated.  If you have water in your home or business from a storm, please call us.

Eliminating Secondary Fire Damage

1/29/2019 (Permalink)

When a fire occurs, it is not only the building that has the fire that is affected. Often, the surrounding structures suffer secondary damage like a layer of soot and smoke odors. If not properly cleaned in a timely fashion, the issue can lead to more permanent damage that unfortunately cannot be reversed. Here we see Odir cleaning the floors of an affected apartment to remove a thin layer of soot that will also remove the resulting odors. Because we responded within hours of the fire being extinguished, this will ensure that no long-term damage will occur.

Crawl Space Cleaning

1/29/2019 (Permalink)

This customer called us with mouse droppings and other debris in the crawl space under their business. This was causing foul odors to permeate up into the actual retail area.  Because business was conducted in the space, a loss of business was at stake.  We knew that we needed to take care of the issue quickly to minimize the effects on the tenants business.  We came in and cleaned both visible and invisible contaminants, and left the space fresh. We can see Roberto here, proud of the good job he did.

Small Pipe, Big Problems

1/28/2019 (Permalink)

It is astonishing just how much damage a little water can do. Take a look at the damage in this bedroom. The entire ceiling had to be removed and some of the walls were affected as well. You can see the size of the pipe that caused the damage.  If a pipe this size can produce that much water, imagine if the pipe had been one of the larger ones in the home.

We had to remove the ceiling and portions of the wall to begin the drying process.  Once that is done, we can bring in our fans and dehumidifiers.

Mild Winters Cause Mold

1/28/2019 (Permalink)

We’ve had a pretty mild winter, which means that any water that remains from melting ice or snow will stick around. This leads to mold, which can be harmful to humans and also pets if ingested. This issue will only grow as the weather begins to warm up for the spring season.  We can safely and effectively clean mold from surfaces like the exposed wood seen here. We are spraying disinfectant to ensure that after cleaning, mold will not return.

One piece of equipment that we also use is a High-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) purifier.  They work by filtering air through a fine mesh, removing harmful particles like mold, dust mites, and pollen that can cause adverse health affects.

One of the benefits that SERVPRO of Stamford offers is our pack-out service. When disaster strikes your home or business, more often than not, you need to have your belongings stored while remediation is performed. Your business may smell like smoke or have a musty odor.  Items should be stored away so they do not take on any unwanted smells.  Items may also just need to be moved to make room for remediation efforts to continue.  SERVPRO will carefully wrap and store your items while we make it "Like it never even happened." Here we see Luis and Emilio loading up our vans with items to be stored.

Winter Cleaning Tips

1/25/2019 (Permalink)

When the temperature drops, we tend to spend more time indoors. Because this occurs, why not take the extra step to make sure you have a home you enjoy spending time in.

Here are a few small cleaning projects that you can undertake during the winter months to ensure that your home is both safe and cozy for the winter months.

Empty dryer vents - Pull the dryer out from the wall and disconnect the hose from the back of the appliance.  Use a vacuum to suck any loose lint from the exhaust hose.  Not only is this a step to take for safety measures, this will lead to a more efficient dryer performance. This can lower electricity bills a small amount.

Steam carpets and couches - Sometimes vacuuming doesn't get the whole job done. Even if your carpets look clean, carpets should be deep cleaned by a professional to eliminate any harmful and gross materials that a vacuum might miss.

Attic Fire

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

This is a recent fire that started in a residential attic.  The fire started when some flammable material was left in front of a skylight, which ignited under extreme heat.  The fire started in the attic, and spread down to one side of the house.  SERVPRO of Stamford was called in to remediate the damage.  We will be providing a few different services in this case.  First, we will be packing up contents and belongings to store while other work is being done.  We will also be cleaning the soot off the walls, as well as deodorizing the area from the smoke smell.  Then, reconstruction can begin on the actual frame of the house.

To avoid a similar disaster, remember to keep all flammable objects out of direct sunlight where they may get too hot.

Fire Education Class

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

One of the best ways to learn how to avoid a disaster occurring in your home is to be educated about the issues that can be prevented.  Getting that knowledge at an early age is even more valuable, so it becomes normal at a young age.

That is why SERVPRO of Stamford sponsored a local class for young kids to learn about disaster prevention and management.  The children learned about fire safety in the summer class.  They learned how to make an evacuation plan for the family in the event of a fire, or any other situation where they would need to leave the house.  In the photo, the class is learning about the fire trucks and how they work to put out fires.  Each child even got to spray the hose!

Wind Damage Restoration

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

Hurricane damage sometimes includes severe wind damage. Roof damage in this situation may range from a missing roof, to harsh winds and rains shearing away asphalt tiles. Roof repair of obvious defects usually ensues in the wake of hurricane damage and storm remediation. Correcting roof damage may challenge homeowners after a disaster, since a roof leak may not appear obvious.

Wind damage may loosen shingles, which can cause another roof leak in the future. Even a subtle roof leak of this nature can produce mold inside the home. Obtaining fast roof repair may prevent long term interior damage. A wind damage home restoration expert may assist clients in receiving comprehensive roof assessments and roof repair services when hurricane damage afflicts an area. Their expertise helps property owners address storm damage and roof damage more effectively.

Storm Shutters

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

Sometimes it's hard to tell what preventative measures are necessary to protect your home from a natural disaster. However, high winds and hurricane damage in the past few years have cost Americans several billions, and unprotected windows can result in expensive damages like broken windows and eventual mold.

• Accordion: Simple and straightforward to use, these manually folding shutters are available in strong materials like metal or polycarbonate.  These are the ones in the photo.

• Bahama: This stylish variety not only provides protection from heavy rain and high winds, but also from the sun.

• Colonial: Protect your dream home with traditional blinds that frame your windows and add value to your property.

• Rolling: Prepare for a storm with ease with shutters that unroll or hide away at the press of a button.

All of these different options are permanent home fixtures that come in a range of materials, colors and designs. They’ll protect your home from flying objects, heavy rains and strong winds, so you won’t have to worry about damage to your windows or your home interior.

Home Depot has some options if this is something that you would like to look into.

Water Damage Response Time

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

When a water issue strikes your home or business, response time is the most important factor when containing the damage.  SERVPRO of Stamford is extremely fast, but steps that you can take on your own before our professionals arrive can make a huge difference.

Within Minutes:

  • Water quickly spreads throughout your property, saturating everything in its path.
  • Water is absorbed into walls, floors, upholstery, and belongings.
  • Furniture finishes may bleed, causing permanent staining on carpets.
  • Photographs, books, and other paper goods start to swell and warp.

Hours 1 - 24:

  • Drywall begins to swell and break down.
  • Metal surfaces begin to tarnish.
  • Furniture begins to swell and crack.
  • Dyes and inks from cloth and paper goods spread and stain.
  • A musty odor appears.

Flood At A Car Dealership

8/2/2018 (Permalink)

Last month, the combination of a burst pipe and excess rainwater caused a local car dealership to flood.

SERVPRO of Stamford was called in to remediate the damage.  What was unique about this instance is that the water affected both carpeted and laminate flooring.  This presented a challenge because we needed to use multiple types of drying and dehumidifying tactics to successfully fix the issue.  We also had to do the job while not disturbing or damaging the automobile inventory.

As you can see in the photo, we were able to completely dry out the affected area.  The carpet in the office areas were left dry and odor free.

Treat Mold Quickly

6/5/2018 (Permalink)

This is a job that we recently dealt with.  The customer had a water damage that was treated by another company.  The water was not completely dried out.  This led to mold growing in the ceiling when the leftover moisture warmed and provided an ideal habitat for the mold to spread.  Unfortunately, because the issue was not properly mitigated by the initial company, SERVPRO needed to demolish part of the ceiling and walls to effectively treat the situation.  Now the mold is gone, new ceiling and drywall has been installed, and the customer is back in their home.

If you have a water damage at your home, or you suspect that you have mold growing, do not hesitate to call SERVPRO of Stamford at (203) 324-1642.  Time is of the essence, and they will make it "Like it never even happened."

Water Leak in a Commercial Building

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

Recently, we were called to remediate a large-scale water damage in a multi-use commercial building.  Multiple businesses were affected when a sink malfunctioned, and water pooled on the second floor, seeped into the drywall, and flowed down to the first floor.

Our crew responded quickly, using cutting-edge equipment to extract thousands of gallons of water.  Once the excess water was removed, we observed that the carpets and the lower drywall was the most in need of drying.  Our skilled crew set fans to dry the affected area in a timely and efficient manner.  The photo shows our fans in action as they evaporate the moisture in one of the affected carpeted areas.

The customers involved were taken care of, and were all happy with the outcome after our crews finished the job.

SERVPRO of Stamford is always ready to help those in need, so if you suffer a damage like this, please do not hesitate to call.

Document Recovery with SERVPRO of Greenwich

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

At SERVPRO of Stamford, we have the ability to save or recover your most important documents after a loss.  Whether it be a fire loss, water loss or flooding, or smoke damage, we have the capabilities to clean and dry those documents to have your commercial or residential property back to its original state as soon as possible.

We will begin by taking inventory of your documents at your home or office before we package them to transport for drying.

Once the documents arrive at our facility, they will go through a decontamination process to remove any bacteria left behind, depending on what type of loss has occurred.

We will then go through each box, page by page, to wipe down and remove dirt, soot, or other contaminants.  We have 3 levels of cleaning based on the type of soiling, and how heavy it is.

Many times documents that have been affected will hold residual smells of contaminants, or mildew, and should be deodorized before being returned to your client.

With the new age of technology, digitizing records and documents has become a standard practice in most industries. This eliminates the need to have massive file storage rooms and allows us to access records at the click of a button. If your file room was damaged by water, or smoke, and needed to be cleaned, dried, or decontaminated, digitizing might be a good choice to eliminate the need to have 100’s or even 1000’s of documents and records in storage.

During the aftermath of your loss,  often times facilities will find that they have documents they no longer need and would simply like to have them disposed of properly.  SERVPRO of Stamford is able to help with this process as well.

Hurricane Preparedness Week

5/9/2018 (Permalink)

Hurricanes are not just a coastal problem. Their impacts can be felt hundreds of miles inland, and significant impacts can occur without it being a major hurricane. Hurricane Preparedness Week (May 6-12, 2018) is your time to prepare for a potential land-falling tropical storm or hurricane.

During Hurricane Preparedness Week, make sure you have a hurricane evacuation plan. You do not need to travel hundreds of miles. Identify someone, perhaps a friend or relative who doesn’t live in an evacuation zone or unsafe home, and coordinate with them to use their home as your evacuation destination. Be sure to account for your pets, as most local shelters do not permit them. Put the plan in writing for you and those you care about.

If a hurricane strikes, you’re going to need supplies not just to get through the storm but for the potentially lengthy recovery period that could follow. Have enough non-perishable food, water and medicine to last each person in your family a minimum of one week. Electricity and water could be out for at least that long. You’ll need extra cash, a battery-powered radio and flashlights.

This Hurricane Preparedness Week, call your insurance company or agent and ask for an insurance checkup to make sure you have enough homeowners insurance to repair or even replace your home. Don’t forget coverage for your car or boat. Remember, standard homeowners insurance doesn’t cover flooding. Whether you’re a homeowner or renter, you’ll need a separate policy for flooding. Act now as flood insurance requires a 30-day waiting period.

The time to prepare for a hurricane is before the season begins, when you have the time and are not under pressure. Take the time now to write down your hurricane plan. Know where you will ride out the storm and get your supplies now. You don’t want to be standing in long lines when a Hurricane Watch is issued. Those supplies that you need will probably be sold out by the time you reach the front of the line. Being prepared, before a hurricane threatens, makes you resilient to the hurricane impacts of wind and water. It will mean the difference between your being a hurricane victim and a hurricane survivor.

Mold In Your Washing Machine

5/8/2018 (Permalink)

We are soon entering warmer weather, which puts us at higher risk for mold and mold-related issues.  One place that we often overlook for mold is in our washing machine.  Whether top-load or front-load, new or used, every washing machine provides an ideal habitat for mold. The high moisture content in both the machine and the resulting atmosphere, the typical poorly-ventilated laundry room with its stale warm air, and the continual supply of decomposing organic material provided by soiled laundry all contribute to an environment conducive to mold growth and its accompanying mildew smell.

Here is how to ensure your washer and the surrounding area stays free of harmful mold:

You will need the following materials:

• White vinegar

• A natural all-purpose mold killing solution

• A cleaning rag (or sponge)

Begin with the exterior of the machine.  Use vinegar or the all-purpose mold killing solution to wipe down the exterior of the machine. This will remove the more visible grime, such as dust and oily fingerprints. (Both organic sources provide floating mold spores with a tantalizing invitation to congregate and colonize.)

Next, clean around the lid and seal. For front-load washers, the rubber door seal will need extra care in order to ensure the removal of mold and mildew. Gently pull back on the rubber stripping and use vinegar or the all-purpose mold killing solution. Even if no mildew or scum is visible, Step 2 is necessary in the prevention of mold growth.

——

Pour two cups of vinegar or lemon juice into the washer. Run the machine for a complete cycle on the longest, hottest setting. This will remove the mold odor and mildew smell, as well as stains and the build-up of detergents.

Once you have completed your cleaning process, discard the rags or sponges that you used, as they may contain harmful mold particles.

The majority of owners neglect to do regular maintenance on their washing machines. In addition, some owners only compound matters by leaving laundry in the machine hours, sometimes even a day or more, after a wash has completed.  What is often overlooked is the fact that mold grows quickly and can thrive off of laundry detergent due to its plant-based (and even animal fat or synthetic) components.  So use good timing when doing your laundry, and move your clothes to the dryer promptly.

Storm Safety Tips

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Lightning from thunderstorms injures hundreds of people in the U.S. every year and kills dozens. These causalities are easily preventable if you follow these simple safety tips.

1) Listen to the radio and television for severe thunderstorm warnings. The National Weather Service issues warnings for counties and even sends out text messages now to our mobile phones when storms are on their way. Pay attention and heed their warnings for safety.

2) Remember the 30 second rule. If there is not 30 seconds in between the time you see lightning and hear thunder, it’s time to go indoors.

3) Lightning typically strikes the tallest object around so if there is a storm, move indoors if at all possible or into a hard top car if there are no buildings around.

4) Once inside, stay away from windows, plumbing and electrical. If lightning strikes outside, it can carry inside via land lines.

5) Get out of boats and away from bodies of water. If you can hear thunder than you are close enough to get struck by lightning.

6) If you are caught outside, avoid standing by tall isolated objects such as trees. Find a grouping of small trees surrounded by taller ones, avoid bodies of water, and if there is only open spaces, look for a dry low-lying area and try to make yourself the smallest target possible. Do not lay flat on the ground, rather crouch with your head between your knees. Sheds, outhouses and tents provide no safety so keep this in mind when you are hiking or camping. Always think ahead and be prepared in the event that you are caught in a thunderstorm and if possible, turn around on your trip and head home.

Power Outage Tips

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

When a heavy storm hits your area, your power may go out.  Most of us have experienced it before.  It can range from a minor inconvenience that lasts less than an hour, to a multi-day event that requires safety precautions be taken.

If your refrigerator loses power, food and other perishables are safe to consume if the outage lasts 4 hours or less.  After this period, bacteria can grow and cause food to be unsafe to eat. Medications that need to be refrigerated can lose their potency if warmed too much.  Most medications are still effective up to 24 hours after a power loss.  Still check each label to verify. After that period, discard all medications unless otherwise noted.

If an outage occurs in either the winter or summer, extreme temperatures can come into play.  Both heat stroke and hypothermia can affect people if the building without power has no means of temperature regulation.  If too hot, seek out a commercial space that has a generator powering an air conditioning system.

Fire Extinguisher Importance For Your Home or Business

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Office buildings need specific fire safety equipment to keep both employees and clients safe. This includes smoke detectors, sprinklers, fire alarms, and extinguishers.

The first step in fire damage restoration is to put out the fire using the proper tools.  A first responder may use an approved portable fire extinguisher to prevent a small fire from growing and causing further damage.

The National Fire Protection Agency publishes a series of standards and requirements for portable fire extinguishers called NFPA 10, available here.

No matter what the size of the fire, your first priority should be to get everyone out safely and call 911.  Once the fire has been put out, you can call SERVPRO of Stamford at (203) 324-1642 to assist.

After a large fire loss many questions need to be answered such as:

• What was the source of the fire?

• Were there any fire accelerants present?

• Was there negligence or arson activity?

• Was it a mechanical/structural issue or human error?

Local fire departments, private insurance companies, gas and power company representatives and many others are called upon to investigate the scene of the fire and do their best to answer these and many other questions. This process can take from a few days to several weeks.

SERVPRO will set up a containment fence around the perimeter of the property and install any needed wind and/or erosion control barriers. We will bring on site portable restrooms and any heavy equipment such as excavators, backhoes and skid steers that are requested by the investigation team.  We provide the investigators with a mobile office, generators for power, lights and computers, hard hats, gloves, respirators, eye protection, water, coffee and miscellaneous office supplies.

Providing the fire investigation team with all the resources necessary to accurately and quickly determine the cause of the fire, helps streamline the entire insurance claims process, ensuring the reconstruction is started sooner for the property owners, so they can get back to living "Like it never even happened.

SERVPRO of Stamford is here to help with all fire damage and remediation issues.

Avoiding a Dryer Fire

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

The fear of a dryer fire is one that is not commonly heard of, however, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are an estimated annual 15,500 fires, 10 deaths and 10 injuries due to clothes dryer fires. Several hundred people a year are also subjected to carbon monoxide poisoning from improper dryer vent setups. The financial costs come to nearly $100,000,000 per year. In some cases faulty appliances are to blame, but many fires can be prevented with proper dryer venting.

Here are some small steps to take to Avoid a Dryer Fire:

1. Dryer's produce large amounts of lint. Be sure to clean the lint trap after EVERY use of the dryer.

2. Dryer Vents should ONLY be made of metal and be short and straight. Bends and curves result in lint buildup increasing the risk of a fire.

3. Do not run the dryer when you are away from home or sleeping.

What is Ice Damming?

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

An ice dam is an ice build-up on the eaves of sloped roofs of heated buildings that results from melting snow under a snow pack reaching the eave and freezing there. Freezing at the eave impedes the drainage of meltwater, which adds to the ice dam and causes backup of the meltwater in a manner, which may cause water leakage into the roof and consequent damage to the building and its contents if the water leaks through the roof.

Ice dams are a common sight in the Northeast. We've handled several claims this past month stemming from ice damming. What we've found is the flatter the pitch of the roof, the easier it is for an ice dam to get a grip. Gutters at the eaves can also trap snow and ice. If snow and ice build up high enough in the gutter, it can provide a foundation for an ice dam.

Stay tuned for our next blog, where we’ll tell you how to prevent these dangerous ice dams.

Ice Dam Prevention

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

PREVENTING ICE DAMS

You can scrape snow from the roof whenever it falls, using a snow rake from below or a broom or plastic shovel from above. BE CAREFUL: The first method can bury you in snow, while the second can send you slipping off the roof. Hire someone who knows how to use a safety line.

You can replace your shingle roof with standing seam or other metal roof. Or you can replace the bottom three feet or so of your shingle roof with a wide metal drip edge. Whatever you do, install a water-repellent membrane under any new roofing.

NOTE: If your roof is not very steep, an ice dam can still form on metal roofing and drip edges.

DEALING WITH EXISTING ICE DAMS

1. Remove the ice dam by breaking it free in small chucks. Do NOT use an ax or other sharp tool! You’ll cut through the shingles. Instead, tap lightly with a blunt mallet. This is slow, dangerous work, so hire someone experienced at roofing. Even if you do it safely, the chunks of ice can take pieces of shingle with them.

2. Clear out gutters and downspouts. Again, this is ladder work and an easy way to damage either plastic or metal gutters and spouts.

3. Melt troughs through the ice dam with calcium chloride ice melter. Do NOT use rock salt! It will damage paint, metals, and plants beneath the eave and wherever the salty water drains.

A good trough-maker is a tube of cloth (a leg from an old pair of panty hose works well). Fill it with calcium chloride, tie off the top, and lay it vertically across the ice dam. It will slowly melt its way down through the dam, clearing a path for the underlying water to flow free.

WHAT DAMAGE DO ICE DAMS CAUSE?

When an ice dam gets big enough, melted water backs up behind it and seeps underneath the shingles. Eventually, it will drip into the insulation and down into the ceilings and exterior walls beneath the eave, ruining sheetrock and paint. If the ice dam breaks free, it can pull shingles and gutters off with it, and it will damage anything it falls on: shrubs, windowsills, cars, pets, and people. If the roof sheathing stays wet, it can form mildew and start to rot.

That's where we come into play. We can't prevent the ice damming from happening, but we can help you take care of the damages that it can cause.

Frozen Pipe Water Damage In Stamford

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Temperatures have fluctuated between cold and bone-chillingly cold.  When it gets very cold, homes and businesses are at higher risk of pipes freezing and ultimately bursting.

Here are a few tips to remember:

• Check around your home or business for areas where water supply lines are in unheated areas. Wrap exposed pipes with foam, insulated materials or pipe heating cables. Watch these locations on a daily basis when temperatures is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

• If you are going out of town, and you suspect that temperatures will drop, turn off the water to your home and open all the taps to drain the water system. Set your temperature no lower than 55° F.

• Unhook the water hoses from the exterior of the home and bring them inside, to maintain their life.

• Drip your faucets, to reduce the build-up of pressure in the pipes during an arctic blast weather advisory.

• Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.

• Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much costlier repair job if pipes freeze and burst

• Open cabinet doors when temperatures are below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. The warm air can circulate around the pipes and prevent the water from freezing.

Popular Locations of Frozen Pipes:

• Outside wall

• Under a sink

• Unheated crawlspace or basement

• Outside water spigot

• Swimming pool supply lines

• Water sprinkler lines

• Attics

• Garages

Tips on Thawing Frozen Pipes:

• If a pipe bursts before it is thawed, immediately shut off the water at the water main to prevent further damage!

• Frozen but not ruptured? If you turn on the faucet and the water doesn’t come out or comes out in a trickle, your pipes are probably frozen. You need to act quickly to thaw the frozen pipe before it bursts.

• Identify the frozen water supply pipe.

• Open a faucet supplied by the frozen line, even if you have not found the frozen spot.

• To find the blockage, follow the pipe back from the faucet to where it runs through cold areas such as an exterior wall, unheated crawl space or in some cases an unheated basement if the pipe is near an outside wall.

• Often the frozen area of the pipe will be frosted or have ice on it. If the situation is getting critical the pipe may be slightly bulged or look slightly fissured.

Frozen Pipe Behind a Wall:

• Leave the main water valve near your water meter open when thawing the pipe.

• If the frozen pipe is behind a wall or ceiling, you’ve got a challenge on your hands. You have three choices:

• Turn up the heat in the house and wait.

• Use an infrared lamp or lamps to heat the wall where you think the frozen area is located. Infrared lamps are better than regular heat lamps because the heat passes through the air without heating it, directing more energy to warming the wall and frozen pipe.

• Tear out part of the wall or ceiling to get at the frozen section of pipe. Then thaw the pipe as an exposed pipe.

If Your Pipes Burst…

• Turn off the water supply. Locate your water shut off valve and turn off the main water shut-off valve. You should find this in the basement or where the service pipe enters your home. Drain the system by turning on all your cold-water valves.

What You Can Do to Manage the Damage (until we get there):

• Water Buckets. If you notice the leak quickly you can catch dripping water in buckets.

• Make a hole in the ceiling to let water out.

• Turn off electronics/appliances

• Open Drawers, closets and cabinet doors to in enhance drying.

Prevent Legionnaire’s Disease in Commercial Settings

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

From the CDC:

Water System Maintenance

The key to preventing Legionnaires’ disease is to   prevent Legionella colonization (growth) in water systems.  Guidelines for reducing the risk of Legionella growth and spread are available for those who maintain and manage building water systems, including systems for potable (water for drinking and showering), non-potable, and recreational water from ASHRAE®. ASHRAE is a not-for-profit organization that develops standards and guidelines for industries that design, manufacture, and maintain building systems.

Dangers of Asbestos in a Business

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Although asbestos is for the most part no longer used in construction and manufacturing, many buildings today still retain traces or even large quantities of asbestos. Particularly in older buildings, testing for and identifying this asbestos is an important job, but one that is unfortunately neglected by many business owners. Failing to test for asbestos when making renovations or restorations to a building can cause long-term negative health effects for restoration professionals, customers, and even yourself, creating a legal and financial disaster large enough to ruin most businesses. There are specific Federal regulations mandated by the EPA regarding renovating buildings, and asbestos abatement. SERVPRO provides certified asbestos testing to ensure the safety of our technicians and your customers alike.

Asbestos testing for a business is not only advisable for practical reasons, but also for legal ones. Failing to test for asbestos can lead to steep fines and regulatory penalties, regardless of whether or not the substance is present. OSHA has explicit guidelines in place regarding demolition or renovations of commercial structures, especially schools, and other municipal buildings. Furthermore, if a customer or employee gets sick as a result of untested asbestos, you may be at risk of a costly and difficult lawsuit. Federal and state authorities alike take this process seriously, which is why it is always recommended to hire a certified company like SERVPRO to complete the task.

Health Reasons
In addition to laws on the subject, testing for asbestos should be a major consideration for your health. Asbestos can cause many negative health effects, some of which can shorten your lifespan or lead to long-term illness. Asbestos is a known carcinogen. The longer you are exposed to it, the more likely many of these side effects are to manifest, meaning that valued employees and regular customers may also be at risk. Just as the removal of mold growth can help to avoid a medical emergency in your business, so too can asbestos testing prevent a host of serious medical issues.

Your local SERVPRO is certified in asbestos testing and guarantees a fast and efficient process for your business. Call us today for our services or a quote.

Be Smart About Garage Storage

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

With spring coming in the coming months, most of us try to accomplish new goals, get a new fresh start. Getting healthy, organizing our homes, bettering our lives' always seem to be at the top of the list. One space to start cleaning and organizing is the garage! That extra storage area that easily becomes a catchall for excess items.  We have compiled a list of items that should not be stored in your garage. Get them out and reclaim your space.

Paint - Because the garage is prone to extreme temperature changes, paint should not be stored in the garage.  Recycle paint or donate it.

Electronics- If you are putting electronics out in the garage, you must not be using them.  Donate these items because they can’t withstand the temperature fluctuations and will easily break.

Propane and Hazardous Chemicals- Proper ventilation is key for storage of propane and hazardous chemicals.  For safety reasons, these items need to be stored outside.

Food- Keeping food in the garage is an open invitation to rodents and insects.  Although shopping in bulk can save money, storing extra food in the garage will cause problems. The moisture and humidity will spoil the food. Find room in the house for food storage.

Cardboard boxes- Insects, mice and other rodents love cardboard.  Invest in waterproof plastic bins to store your items.

Mold After A Disaster

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Picture this: Your home or business is affected by a storm, whether the roof suffered a structural issue, or you had flooding from excess water coming in.  You fix the hole in the roof and dry the water yourself, and life continues as normal.  A couple months down the road, you find mold where the storm had previously had damaged your building.

Make sure this doesn’t happen.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has some great info about how to prevent mold after a storm hits your home or business.

After natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods, excess moisture and standing water contribute to the growth of mold in homes and other buildings. When returning to a home that has been flooded, be aware that mold may be present and may be a health risk for your family.

Clean up and dry out the building quickly (within 24 to 48 hours - SERVPRO of Stamford can help with this). Open doors and windows. Use fans to dry out the building. Position fans to blow air out doors or windows.

Remove all porous items that have been wet for more than 48 hours and that cannot be thoroughly cleaned and dried. These items can remain a source of mold growth and should be removed from the home. Porous, noncleanable items include carpeting and carpet padding, upholstery, wallpaper, drywall, floor and ceiling tiles, insulation material, some clothing, leather, paper, wood, and food. Removal and cleaning are important because even dead mold may cause allergic reactions in some people.

To prevent mold growth, clean wet items and surfaces with detergent and water.

Protect Your Investment by Inspecting Your Crawlspace

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Over time crawlspaces need maintenance.

Crawl Spaces in Fairfield County

Many homes in southwest Connecticut are built on crawlspaces.  Snow load, water runoff, and rising water tables need to be dealt with to maintain your property.

If maintained properly, crawlspaces have advantages over other types of construction.

• It gets the house above the ground, an important point in damp areas.

• It is less expensive than a basement, and comparable to the price of a slab foundation.

• Duct work, plumbing, and electrical can run in the crawl space, which makes them easier to service, and move if necessary.

Items to inspect for are:

• Standing water on top of vapor barrier.

• Condensation or leaks on water pipes or ductwork.

• Muddy soil.

• Staining on walls from water or efflorescence.

• Sagging or missing insulation.

• Plumbing leaks.

• Musty/moldy or foul odors.

• Deteriorated vapor barrier.

If mold is found anywhere in your crawlspace, call SERVPRO of Stamford to make it like it never even happened.

Strange (but common) Places to Find Mold

2/5/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can grow in many places.

When we think of mold problems we equate it to damp basements and black gross mold growing on drywall; but mold is insidious and can grow in places where you least expect it. Mold is fast growing, can pop up within 24 hours of being exposed to moisture, and spreads quickly.

Here are some common places where mold forms that you might not be aware of:

• Under Your Refrigerator

The spaces behind and under your fridge rarely see the light of day, which make them a perfect breeding ground for mold. Clean all water lines and drip pans and ensure they are not leaking; even a small leak can lead to a huge mold problem. Take the extra time to check and clean behind and underneath your refrigerator.

• Chimneys

Your chimney can easily become a breeding ground for mold. Brick crevices collect water, dirt, and other organic debris. Rusted chimney caps and faulty flashing let in rain and snow, encouraging mold to grow. Replace rusted caps and fix flashing. Call a licensed mold removal specialist to remove the mold in your chimneys. To prevent mold, get your chimney cleaned by a professional chimney sweep at least once a year.

• Front-Loading Washing Machines

Front-loading washing machines are great, but can be a hotspot for mold growth. The gasket around the door on front-loading washing machines often stays wet because the door is usually closed when not in use. Add some lint to the moisture and mold happily munches and multiplies. Wipe the gasket and glass dry before you shut the door. If you spot mold, run a hot water wash with some chlorine bleach (no clothes), which will kill the fungi. Even if you have a top-load washer make sure to regularly check behind and underneath your washer and dryer to make sure there are no leaks or source of moisture. Clean out vents and lint traps to prevent mold havens, as well as fire hazards.

• Window Sashes and Seals

Condensation from windows provides the moisture mold loves, and the dirt and dust that collect provide the perfect place for the mold to settle. After heavy rains open windows and wipe moisture from the bottoms of sashes and windowsills. Replace any broken seals and if you notice any water has leaked into the wood and walls call a professional to see if the problem has caused mold.

• Air Conditioners

Air conditioning units trap dust and pollen (a good meal for mold) and grab moisture from the air. If you don’t run your AC unit at least every 24 hours in warm weather humidity in your house climbs, giving mold the opportunity to grow in AC ducts, drain pans, and on coils. Drip pans and drainage hoses on window units can leak causing mold to grow into the windowsill and dry wall. If mold grows in your central air conditioning unit you’ll have to hire a mold remediation pro to clean out the system.

If you suspect you may have mold contact the experts at SERVPRO of Stamford.

Cleaning Mold from Tiles & Grout

2/2/2018 (Permalink)

Removing mold from tiles and grout can be a lengthy process, but SERVPRO of Stamford does our best to get it taken care of in the proper steps.

First, begin by scrubbing the mold off the tiles and grout. You should use a scrubbing brush along with a household cleaning product or mold killing product. There are also commercial tile or grout cleaners you can buy.

After this you'll probably find there is still mold stains left on the grout. You can use bleach to fade these stains away. Before you use the bleach you should spot test it to make sure that it won't discolor your tiles. You should also wear gloves to protect your hands from the bleach.

Apply the bleach to the grout and leave it sit for about 10 minutes. Instead of chlorine bleach you can use hydrogen peroxide if you like. Another alternative is to use baking soda. Mix it with water to create a paste and then use a toothbrush to scrub it onto the grout.

If you find the stain remains on the grout after bleaching then repeat the process. Give it some time and this should fade away the mold stains on the grout.

Fresh Year, Fresh Look with Dry Ice Blasting

11/29/2017 (Permalink)

Dry ice blasting is a relatively new cleaning process using solid CO2 pellets (known as dry ice). It is primarily used for industrial use in a variety of applications. The pellets sublimate (convert directly from a solid blast pellet to a vapor (CO2) leaving no residue. The process is superior to sand blasting, glass bead
blasting and other types of cleaning methods for numerous reasons.

Be Prepared For A Hurricane

5/12/2017 (Permalink)

The threat of a potential hurricane is always nerve wracking to all in the affected area. However, being prepared and knowledgeable of precautionary measures to take in the event of a hurricane can ease some the stress and panic you may be experiencing.

Having a ready to go emergency kit is key in any disaster situation. According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the contents of this kit should include:

  • Map(s) of your local area
  • Tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers or pliers to maneuver utilities
  • Matches
  • Sanitation products such as baby wipes, trash bags and disinfectant
  • Dust masks in the case of air contamination
  • Plastic sheeting and Duct Tape for creating shelter-in-place.
  • A battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA weather radio
  • Multiple flash lights
  • Surplus of batteries (for radio/flashlight)
  • A First aid kit
  • At least 3 days worth of non perishable food (per person) and can opener if needed
  • At least 3 days worth of water (1 gallon per person, per day)

This basic list is, of course, to be adjusted and will differ person to person depending on specific needs such as any medications, pet needs, money, gasoline etc. But this list provided is a staple for a basic emergency kit.

To be aware of what is happening around you before the storm hits, be sure to frequently check the news to gather updated information on the storm. Familiarize yourself with which is the safest room in your home, evacuation routes, and locations of shelters.

During the storm the measures to take are quite simple. If no emergency evacuation is issued, stay in the safest room of your home, away from all windows and have all necessary emergency supplies on hand. Listen to a battery powered radio for updates and be sure the storm is officially over before leaving shelter. Hurricanes are known to subside for a brief amount of time if the eye of the storm passes over you, but then resumes again in full force.

After you are sure the storm is over you may go outside and observe any serious damage. If there are any signs of danger such as downed power lines and fallen trees, report them immediately and steer clear of any threat.

Did you know that sewage backups are more than just a foul-smelling mess? These backups contain viruses, bacteria, and other microbes that can cause serious illnesses if not treated as an emergency. Be SERVPRO Ready and know what contaminated water is.

There are three types of contaminated water:

Category 1 – Clear Water

  • Includes water from a clean source like a broken water line
  • If not treated, it can turn into category 2 or 3

Category 2 – Gray Water

  • May contain bacteria and viruses
  • Can result from a washing machine, dishwasher, or toilet overflow

Category 3 – Black Water

  • May contain untreated sewage, chemicals, and microbes
  • Highly contaminated and can cause severe illness
  • Results from water from flooding rivers or sewer backups

Tips & Facts:

  • Only restoration professionals should cleanup sewage backups
  • Don’t run any water down drains until the blockage has been cleared
  • Keep children away from contaminated areas
  • Dispose of or wash any contaminated objects (bedding, clothing, carpets)

At SERVPRO of the Stamford, our professionals are trained and ready to treat any contaminated water issues 24 hours, 365 days a year. Never hesitate to give us a call or visit our website.

SERVPRO® Expands PGA Sponsorship with PGA Fantasy Golf

4/7/2017 (Permalink)

There is an old adage: “It never rains on a golf course.” As the official cleanup and restoration company of the PGA TOUR, SERVPRO® knows this isn’t true, but rain or shine, fans follow their favorite players’ performance at PGA golf tournaments throughout the season. Recognizing the ever-growing popularity of the game, SERVPRO has expanded its relationship with the PGA TOUR by becoming the presenting sponsor of the PGA Fantasy Golf games, available at pgatour.com/fantasy.

“We know people don’t associate SERVPRO with the wide-open spaces and fair weather feeling of a golf course. After all, SERVPRO is the company you turn to when the unexpected, even the unthinkable, happens to your home or business,” says Michael Keating, owner of SERVPRO® of Stamford. “But each SERVPRO business is also a local business, there to support the community in good times and bad. Teaming up with the PGA TOUR as the sponsor of their Fantasy Golf Suite helps us build connections within our local community. We want local home and business owners to know that we are there for them ready to respond at a moment’s notice if things go wrong.”

The new “One & Done” games were launched on January 3, 2017*, but the game structure allows players to join in on the fun at any point during the current season. Each week, game players select one player to earn points for them in that week’s tournament. The PGA Tour Fantasy game is based on accumulated FedEx Cup points and the PGA Tour Champions game is based on accumulated Charles Schwab Cup points. A player may select a given golfer for a tournament in each of the One & Done games only once in each season. Since some tournaments earn a pro golfer more points than others, game strategy is based on selecting the right golfers for the right tournaments.

“With the first major tournament of the season—The Masters—just around the corner, now is a great time to start your One & Done game for this year’s tour,” says Keating. “If you ‘master’ the trick of choosing the right golfers in the right tournaments, you could jump to the top of your Fantasy league.” The top finisher in the PGA TOUR game will win a new set of golf clubs, while the top prize for the PGA TOUR Champions game is a trip for two to the Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Phoenix Country Club in Phoenix, Arizona, November 6-12.

SERVPRO of Stamford specializes in disaster restoration, cleanup and repair services, helping to remediate damage, making it “Like it never even happened,” for both commercial and residential customers. Stay Healthy During The Winter

2/8/2017 (Permalink)

Although this season is marked by jolly and wonder, there are some aspects that can burden some, either temporarily or over time. Here are some winter health tips that will keep you happy and healthy so that you can truly enjoy the holiday season in all of its glory.

  • Healthy Eating

After Thanksgiving’s kickstart, it is a common temptation to fall into the habit of eating a surplus of sugary, fattening comfort food. However the over indulging might make you start to feel like a part of the Clause family.

To stay on track with healthy eating, push aside those unhealthy comfort foods and make a substitution for something nutritious and tasty. A craving among most is food that is warm and savory due to the bitter cold outside. Most would be quick to grab a fresh batch of chocolate chip cookies, but those may not be the healthiest choice. Soups or stews can satisfy that urge for warmth and flavor while benefitting you with a healthy variety of vegetables and protein. Sweet potatoes offer both savory and sweet food packed with good fats and are very filling. Pairing these foods with dark leafy greens and fresh fruit will create a perfect balance to keep you healthy this winter.

  • Exercise

Although winter deems it perfect weather for hibernation, staying indoors and sleeping beneath blankets all day won’t benefit our health. Get yourself motivated with some upbeat music and get into the swing of a revised workout routine. It obviously can be much more challenging if you are used to doing all of your workouts outside but if you happen to have a gym membership or an open space inside your home, you can quickly develop a newfound workout plan to keep conditioned over the next few chilly months.

Make sure to stretch and warm up before your workout. Since the temperature is so low, it takes more time for your joints and muscles to become ready for exercise. Also of great importance when exercising is to stay hydrated. Drink as much water as you can to keep your body a well oiled machine.

  • Keeping The Flu At Bay

During the winter, germs are flying left and right from those who already fell vulnerable to the common cold. From airborne germs from coughs and sneezes to hand to hand contact, there are many easy ways for you to catch these bugs too. To keep from getting ill it is very important to boost your immune system. Be sure to get proper vitamin intake either from supplements or healthy fruits and veggies. Vitamin C is especially helpful during the cold and flu season because it helps strengthen the immune system to fight of viruses and bacteria.

Stress can also be a major contributor of susceptibility to illness. Make sure you limit the stress of your day to day life through different tactics such as deep breathing or even meditation. Be sure to get proper hours of sleep as well to keep your immune system healthy and stress levels low.

On top of these factors it is also very important to keep the surfaces in your home clean and to always wash your hands after going to the bathroom or touching something that may be in contact with multiple people, such as a door handle or stair railing. This will further limit your chances of becoming sick with the common cold or something worse.

Stamford Fire: Part 1

1/31/2017 (Permalink)

Recently, a family home on Underhill St, Stamford CT, went from the bottom up in flames. The first dispatched firefighters arrived to see dark smoke rising from the home. However, even when the total of four firetrucks and 30 firemen were at the scene, they were prohibited to enter the home due to dangerous electrical complications. It was stated that the fire had initiated from the basement and was possibly caused by a faulty electrical panel. The fire spread through the walls of both the second and third floor doing irreparable damage. After the electricity of the home was disconnected by a power company, the firefighters proceeded their fight to eradicate the growing fire.

Most of the damage harmed only the home; However, both a resident and a firemen were transported to the hospital and released later with no serious injuries.

SERVPRO was at the scene while the fire began to dwindle. Offering our best service and consolation to the family that had been displaced from their home. After consulting and conversing an overview of our procedure and any questions they may have had, our crew was ready for their cue to be at the scene to begin clean up. On arrival, the SERVPRO crew began their course of action for board up. A total of 13 sheets of plywood were required to cover the combination of doors and windows that were lost or damaged in the fire.

What is a Puffback?

1/30/2017 (Permalink)

Among the unfortunate occurrences of mishaps such as frozen pipes, air leaks and ice dams during the winter months, there is also the haywire messes caused by puff backs. A puff back is the result of an oil burner’s hinderance of ignition allowing fumes to accumulate and causes an eruption of debris to travel through a furnace’s exhaust system and into your home. This incident can cause soot to damage multiple areas of your home, especially if you have a heating installation that would allow it to travel by the means of air vents. The emission of soot signifies a problem rooted within the heating system. Although, this does not indicate that there is a need to replace the system entirely.

If a puff back has transpired, you may experience large areas of discoloration on walls, cabinets, curtains, bedding, windows and other areas, as well as an evident, strong and smoke like odor. Unfortunately the soot produced is not an easy mess to eradicate because it will withhold oil from the furnace making it diverse from soot’s common powdery form.

Most puff back cleanups are covered by insurance.  Don’t attempt to clean up the puffback residue without contacting us here at SERVPRO of Stamford first.  We will assess the damage and necessary restoration process. This should be done immediately to ensure the removal of the residue and chemicals is safe and efficient for both you and our staff.  A repair company should also be contacted to locate and correct the problem with your furnace.

In terms of preventing puff backs it may be helpful to inspect your furnace every so often to eliminate the buildup of debris and/or contact your heating company if you begin to experience any sign of soot in proximity to your furnace.

If you experience a puffback, call SERVPRO of Stamford 24/7.

Winter Savings Tips

1/17/2017 (Permalink)

In the new year, many begin to dream of their new resolutions. Some may include losing weight, eating healthily, putting an end to procrastinations and earning a surplus of money. One thing no one wants to start the new year off with is a negative number in your bank account. Shopping over the holidays can be stressful for both you and your checking account.

Here are five quick tips to help you save money over the holiday season:

  • Set yourself a budget:

Come up with a specific price range for which you plan on spending. Base the presents you get off of your budget, not the opposite.

  • After your budget is set, choose to withdraw that amount in cash to reduce the impulse to overspend:

Avoid using a credit card since it can be tempting to push past your previously set budget.

  • When drafting your list of people and gifts, do not neglect the price of wrapping paper, bows, envelopes, stamps, etc. when staying within your budget:

Come up with precise calculations, and account for every item necessary to complete the process that is holiday shopping.

  • Create instead of splurge:

A variety of DIY tutorials on making gifts for family and friends can be found all over the internet. Creating a crafty homemade present has all of the meaning and value at much less of a price. Try looking on sites like Youtube or Pinterest!

  • Co-share your giving:

If you have a lengthy list of people you intend on buying for, it may be easier to pair yourself with another who plans to buy for the same person(s) and split the price between you two.

One important factor to always keep in mind is the ideology behind the holiday season. Try to compensate experienced stress by immersing yourself in your loved ones or enjoying a nice warm cup of hot cocoa. SERVPRO of Stamford wishes you a very happy holiday season and a wonderful New Year!

Ways to Prevent Frozen Pipes

12/30/2016 (Permalink)

As the temperature drops in the chilly months of winter, one of the last things you wish for during this holiday season is a frozen pipe. When water within pipes are exposed to cold temperatures the molecules begin to freeze. Once water converts into its solid form, the ice expands and an increase of pressure within the pipes intensifies. This expansion forces water toward your closed faucet.

Contrary to belief, the problem lies where the water is being pushed; not where it has frozen. Eventually under stress of immense pressure the pipe will rupture.

Here are some steps you can take for prevention and problem solving:

  • Vulnerable pipes can be insulated with fiberglass or foam sleeves. Most hardware stores provide a variety of sizes and thickness to fulfill your needs.
  • Make a habit of opening cupboard doors occasionally to increase circulation of heat.
  • Allow faucets to drip when the temperature drops below-freezing.
  • Seal any cracks that may be present around windows or door frames to eliminate the chance of drafts freezing exposed pipes.

If you know your pipe has already frozen, here are some helpful tips:

  • Use a household hair dryer to thaw a frozen pipe.
  • Heat water over a kitchen stove. Grab one or two towels, and submerge them in the hot water and proceed to wrap the hot towels around the frozen sections of the pipe.

If you find yourself with a bursted pipe, there is a two-step solution:

  • Shut off all water at the main valves
  • Call SERVPRO of Stamford!! SERVPRO provides a 24/7 emergency service and specializes in quick response to water damages.
